Hi everyone
My daughter has finally convinced my to try SUP with her. But I have Osteo Arthritis in the hip and was wondering if anyone else has the same problem and if it aggravated the area too much.
Thanks

I have already had one hip replaced due to osteo arthritis (I had what is called a "Hip Resurfacing", which is a little different than a "Total Hip Replacement", in that instead of cutting off the head and neck of the femur and sticking a metal shaft down the femur, they shave the head of the femur just enough to fit a metal cap over it). The doctors say that the other hip is now ready to be replaced, but I am trying to hold off for another year or so. I have found that SUP and SUS (stand up surfing) is great for my hips. I had to give up prone paddling years ago because my hips had bone spurs all around the joint, so they would not flex enough for me to jump to my feet. Getting to my feet on a SUP is not super easy for my hips, but doing lots of squats like teatrea suggested has made it a lot easier. I no longer need to use it, but when I first started, it helped if I stood my paddle up on end on the deck of the board, and used it as a crutch to get me through the tough part of getting up with my bad hip.
I actually think that SUP is really good for people with bad hips. I know that mine seems to be hurting less overall since I started paddling. I think that all of the balancing helps to strengthen and develop the area around the hip in a way that helps it for everything else.
You should definitely go for it.

I had a total hip replacement about 4 years ago after suffering from a degenerative hip condition and as soon as I had made a recovery I got right into sup. I had been keen for a while but the hip had held me back and then finally getting out on a sup was the best thing ever for my hip and my body overall. Sup paddling and surfing really strengthens the hips, legs, core, back, chest, arms- well lets just say its a total body workout It is also very low impact (usually) so it doesn't aggravate in the way a lot of other activities do.

I would definitely recommend it to someone with hip issues it really helped me
