What was your mate's board? That is probably a good place to start. My guess is that you will need a 10' or 11' board with plenty of width (33" plus) if you are just starting out. Your wife's requirements are quite different. With you each get a board or share?

I have similar height/weight and does my wife. When I bought my first one, I went for a 10' 4" x 32" Paddle Surf Hawaii as this carried my weight easily and still light enough for my wife to handle. Both Starboard and Naish have good boards of similar dimensions that would suit.

10' naish mana @33' wide 190 litres for you and a10.6 Nalu 160 litres . for the misses .
go the Gt or GTW if you can afford it ..
Or check out some Great second hand boards on buy and sell.
i would say make sure you get something in the 190 -200 litre for you to start .
welcome.

I'd recomend a Naish 10' Mana for you.. and a Naish 9'5" Alana Mana for your wife..

Check with your local sup shop that sells Naish boards and see if they have any demo boards in these sizes..

I would recommend the Whopper 10' at 169 litres its spot on to start with and can definately surf it . Very stable at 34" wide.
