It's been a pretty fun sup longboarding summer at home on the NE coast of Aotearoa.
Pretty wet summer, so different than last years utopian like golden glow that lasted for months on end, it also happened to be my first living here.
With March hot on our heals and tropics currently firing back up and the high pressure belt in full swing what do I predict for the next 3 months?
NZ weather is wild! We have had 5/6 massive almost tropical lows slide down in between these fairly big high pressure systems but have glanced us and pushed off the east coast and once there sit off Gisborne before finally fading out. The first system is the one that flooded us out in rural NE New Zealand's bay of plenty and coromandel peninsula. I feel There is 2x Tropical lows that will form over The latter part of March and have similar trajectories except sit a little more NE perfectly with in our prime Swell window creating a more East swells which in turn make Waihi Beach more of a peaky fun park then the Long period NE swells that make it a Sup heaven for longboarding.
The remainder of the month should see some L's form but they will quickly fizzle out only offering 1-2 days of fun level swell. April will be the pick. Consistent 2-5ft the whole month with a lot of all day offshores and long period swell.
this run will continue into late May and we will be back to a NZ winter. March, April, May was amazing in 2025. Looking forward to 2026 unfolding.

Do you ever go to Matakana Island north end to surf? Just curious on what it was like there. In the 80s and 90s I lived at Papamoa and used to surf Puni's or the Mount end several times a week when it was on. Such an incredible wave if you have a boat or want to paddle across that sharky channel lol.
