Follow-me is cool and so helpful, but collision avoidance is really important. My drone flew to the closest tree and crashed into it.

The Mavic camera has a slightly smaller sensor than the Phantom 4 so there is some vision lose plus it's shooting through that clear curved dome which can't help. There are pros and cons on all 3 drones. What will decide it for me is simply image quality that's it. The Mavic has smaller motors than the 4 so it doesn't pull up as quick as fast and probably won't deal with high winds as well but then again I don't fly when its too windy. I almost pushed the button on the Mavic this morning but am swaying back to the Karma purely because it will shoot better vision (I am guessing). Really wasn't impressed with the film clips on Mavic actual vision and same on the Karma. Neither of them come close to the DJI Inspire.

DJI has squeezed in some fancy software into the Mavic to make up for the small sensor which affects your raw files and when you crop it down from 4k it quickly falls apart , simple answer don't shoot in 4k.

They really so simple to fly now , do anything wrong just take your hands off the remote and it just stops & hoovers. Push the return home button and it flies back and lands where it took from on it's on.

Well I just pulled the trigger on the Mavic and this is why....

$2368 Aus can’t order from US which would be heaps cheaper , 3 batteries , multi charger plus bag and other bits. In that price includes 2 replacements if you crash it in the first 12 months. Karma can’t match that.

The Mavic eats the Karma in drone specs and flight time. It really is an amazing drone.

Gopro vision is either fisheye or square , Mavic is rectangular cinematic with log profiles , Gopro has just protune which is sh!t.

Mavic can still fly from your phone if your trash controller. Big plus if you drop the controller in the water.

Karma Gopro 5 specs are a gamble for vision , DJI software is first class in post production.

It’s Gopro’s first drone they will certainly bring out a better one soon to combat the Mavic , no one has ever got the first drone right.

Vision wise I know exactly what I can do with DJI in post production again it’s a roll of the dice with the Gopro , what the Mavic lacks compared to the DJI Phantom 4 is minimal and should match the Gopro 5 in clarity but with cinematic vision.

Another huge plus on the Mavic is you select the person of interest and the drone will follow it without any wifi connection.That’s pretty amazing. Karma has nothing like that , plus no collision control.

Filming in the surf the Mavic will keep away from rising waves if you are too close , the Karma will take a swim.
Hopefully have my Mavic very early November.

Had a friend attend the Gopro release in Aust the other night and there was a lot of talk of Gopro releasing a software update with the 'Follow me' function once they have it right.

Makes a lot of sense, the controller has a GPS chip in it to allow return to home/orbit function, guess it will come in the near future. The DJI Follow Me function is limited to optically tracking an object rather than using a dedicated sensor or GPS.

The removable camera/gimbal and the use of the grip are a big seller for me.

Ive ordered the Karma

The Dji follow me is the same principal as the follow focus in a Sony cam . Just select the person on the live screen and away you go. That's so cool and easy and not relying on an external device strapped to your body.

As you said Karma will release a firmware update on follow me once they get it right. Boom not trashing the Karma it looks really good but maybe version 2 .

I was just about to pull the trigger on either a P4 or an Inspire X5

I am kind of like Casey in that i weight getting the shot and convenience / focus on people / story over lugging tons of gear around
(i attempt to achieve this with minimum effort with a weatherproof GH4 / awesome high end M43 lenses / rode video mic pro / 4k / 96/1080p combo that can all be edited (footage organisation and basic cuts) in the field with a 3 year old Macbook Air.


That video comparison looked really soft on the Mavic's part. I think Casey's super go fast jump cut aesthetic (which I really like) led him to miss the focus set up.

There is some talk that you need to tap to focus first (and maybe Casey forgot to do that part) to achieve results like this from a Mavic

It is but the Phantom4 will not avoid small branches, fronds and twigs, plus it doesn't have disc brakes! You really need to pull-up or back WELL before getting near an object. You really should have line of sight at all times so if you cant fly to avoid obstacles in front of the drone (which are visible on your screen) prob best not to be flying at all!

The compactness of these drones is certainly a draw card. It will be interesting to see if there are any trade-offs against with the Mavic and the Phantom 4.
The clear glass cover at the front may refract light at certain angles and it will def pick up sea spray if it is windy and you are flying low.
It will be interesting to see how the comparisons roll out over time.

I really cant fault the Phantom 4.

Yeah I'm with you Matt I was looking at putting the X5 cam on my Inspire but really is it really worth it for film cuts to drone shots . I got sick of excess baggage chargers to fly with the Inspire. Plus the new laws on sub 2kg drones was the last straw on my Inspire.

You can still shoot in log on the Mavic and apply Luts with a cinematic frame so for me I don't need anything more. Sorry to the none tech heads but this a pretty amazing drone.

AA your are right at 40 mph this drone has much smaller props than the phantom 4 and takes a lot more space to stop , so don't think the collision control will stop crashes at high speed.

obstacle and crash avoidance when in follow me mode is a key strength of intel real sense.

Nice choice Piros, yeah I reckon the "soft footage" is user error (assuming you haven't left the shipping dome on ), as you need to dial in exposure and focus on this camera to get the good stuff from what I've seen, wouldn't want to test your "waves" theory tho

Gopro Have updated the specs on the Karma, can now operate up to 3km (in perfect conditions), interesting how they got that so wrong on the initial release. Lots of other info slowly coming out on the gopro support hub

Not looking good for any stock to be available in Aus after the Oct 23 release, bummer. Jan 2017 maybe
