Looking at the 3D viewer the bottom has some sort of concave but I'm not sure if its dual or single concave. The nose rail is not smooth, hard angle, is that right?

Can someone explain why they're persisting with the bat tail on the 10' Nalu instead of a rounded pin? What advantages does the bat tail have? It's major disadvantage, in my opinion, is it's butt ugly.

I see the x32's have finally gone. Great board and really improved my surfing at the time, rode the 8/3 first then went 7/11. Superb stable board with a **** load of nose rocker that I have missed in other boards I have owned since then.

Bit disappointed to be honest,,,, "surf" boards are same ol same ol... just different colours. AND again there is nothing under 101 litres for us lighter weight int/ advanced riders. Bring back the 90 odd Ltr Hokua and Raptor... they were fun boards. I'm a long time Naish fan ( windsurfing and kiting too). But this measly collection has forced me to look elsewhere for 2019. Hope they sort their s#%t out for 2020.

I like the look of the bat tail and I think it not only has a more modern look but I also think there is a slight performance gain over the roundered pin.

I don't see how you think the Hokua's, the Mana's and the Nalu's all look the same..

I like the changes made in the Hokua and it should make for a much faster down-the-line type board than the old shape Hokua's ..

Thanks DJ. I guessed there would be some advantages and I can deal with weird tails on short boards, but when it comes to longboard shapes I'm a bit of a traditionalist.

The nalu 10 is a great board, yes the bat tail looks odd but why tinker if no substantial performance improvement

A rounded pin just looks so much better and I think would be a better all round option on a 10ft long board.

My longboard SUP has a wide tail with pointy edges in the tail, and it definitely helps a lot holding the tail under the lip during the noses, even without a single fin, and the sharp corners help to have water release cleanly, for less drag. Bat tails, square tails, sci-fi tails, ... have the same function, plus they provide a definite pivot points for tights turns.

This morning again I was making fast sections other surfers with traditional longboards could not make, the speed of these tails once high on the trim line on hollow sections is exhilarating.PS: here is my fin config of choice for this board: Al-Merrick twin fins in front for the hold, even on the nose, and quad rears of the FCSII Tom Carroll set for the looseness of their mini-size, plus the speed of the quad.

I'm keen to try the 8'1" Mad Dog too! I've got a 2017 Mad Dog 8'6" and ready for a new challenge. I like the look of the "bat tail" although I don't care too much for the new 2019 colour scheme. Does anyone know if there is a design/shape difference between 2018 and 2019 mad dogs?

On paper the new Naish Mad Dogs read the same dimensions. However when you put the 2018 and 2019 models side by side they actually are a little different.

Going off the 7'10" Mad Dog the 2019 model has softer rails further forward, its a little more a traditional surfboard rail, hard and sharp through the tail then softening up through the mid section and further forward. The 2018 model rails were harder and sharper a lot further forward. The softer rails on the 2019 are super smooth through the turns and possibly not as catchy.

The 2019 Mad Dog also has a slightly different rocker line. The 019 is just a little flatter through the tail and not quite as aggressive as the 2018 model which had a real late little aggressive kick in the tail. We noticed this straight away on the newer model it feels to be faster but still super snappy and turns just as tight in the pocket.

Both awesome shapes and both surf so well, this is just some minor differences that we have noticed.

We have demos and stock of both models in store at Ocean Addicts if anyone wants to have a go of either you are welcome.

Naish lost the progressive attitude (since 2018 collection).

The only tempting board ( from the surf cat) is the nalu pro.
(They could decrease the nose rocker...)

to create custom boards narrower than 24" for their sponsored racers to use. 24"
is pretty wide for an elite paddler these days.

Yes. Gong uses the McKee setup for the quads, that is the rears are close to the stringer, to give a little bit of a thruster feeling. Basically the quad rears are a split of a thruster rear fin. The other option is to have them on the rail c lose to the front fins, kind of splitting a twin fin.

In the Naish range, the Nalu seems to be more of a McKee setup while the Hokua is more of a "splitted twin" setup.

Most Gong longSUPs have the traditional US box + FCS sides setup, but the ones intended to be turned like shortboards do not get a US box.

Keen to see if they have also refined the massive vee in addition to the massive tail rocker. Love these features on my 8'1 Maddog when riding waves, unreal rail to rail, as expected, and so loose. But not such a fan as regards impact on stability, quite a restless feel where it wants to be on one flat or the other. Managable but takes focus. Nice to hear about refined more even rail, 2017/18 goes from lovely pinched rail in the tail to full hard rail in the middle with a too rapid transition. Doesn't seem to harm performance though. Have they finally got the handle in the right place?

That's interesting on the 18 vs 19 mad dog shapes. I was in a shop yesterday chatting to the guys and they were trying to sell me a 17' or 18' model and said the board hadn't changed but looks like it has. Subtle tweaks here and there can be quite a different board. That 8'1 2019 mad dog looks fun!
