I'm curious to hear what fellow paddlers listen to while on downwinders or even just cruising on a river

Water, wind, birds, waves,
Got me baffled (for want of a word with F in it) why you could possibly need anything else.

For flatwater, compilations of rythmed music with the same BPM (beats per minute) work well to keep the cadence.

Try to find the BPM that fits your intended paddle stroke, and get or make a playlist with it.

As for the genre, something made for moving your body (dance) works best of course...

This.

went to the bother a couple of years ago of getting one of those little waterproof ipod thingies with the waterproof headphones, set up playlists blah blah blah. Tried it, didn't like it. there's usually enough else going on to keep me amused without it.

Flat water race training is almost impossible without music. It is just so dull. You need music for the same reason you need music in a gym - to take your mind off the pain and sheer existential pointlessness of what you are doing.

But I can't conceive of wanting music on a DWer. There's far too much going on. It would be like wearing headphones in a war zone. There's a basic safety aspect. Plus, usually when I'm downwinding it is 25+ knots in the sea and you can't hear anything much above the roar of the ocean and the whistle of the wind anyway.

On a snooze-cruise on a river or other calm water I think I'd rather just listen to the natural sounds.

I haven't done the music while supping yet but if I did, the latest Pink Floyd album would be top of the list.

Just curious
What do people use to hear their music while paddling.
Do you use waterproof MP3's or just get waterproof covers and earphones for ipods or phones

Haha! If your heart rate is below 120, you haven't got a stopwatch on you, you aren't racing, and you are in calm water with little wind, and you are paddling a distance you are used to, then you are snooze-cruising mate. Nothing wrong with a good snooze-cruise. For me, not every session has to be a do-or-die downwinder or surf session, or a balls-out max HR GPS-recorded beasting. But personally, if all I ever did was snooze-cruising then I'd probably fall asleep on my board never to be seen again...nice as it is to watch the wildlife and chat to anyone you meet. For some friends of mine flat water SUPing seems to be as much about the social aspect and the visit to the cafe at the end (or sometimes in the middle) as it is the paddling. That's cool, even if sometimes I do feel like I want to give them a kick up the butt to get moving!

I've got a Sony Waterproof Walkman. Waterproof up to 2mtrs. Been with a swim with me a number of times and still works well
