Like Suporator and his Nias trip, I finally got to the stage of my life where I had the time and the money to travel to one of the world's iconic surf spots. Unfortunately hip problems have ended my shortboard days but SUPs have kept me in the water.
I chose the Maldives Hudhuranfushi trip through WorldSurfaris because my wife was coming along and I thought that there was less likelihood of her being bored on an island as opposed to a boat charter. I need not have worried about boredom - yoga, snorkelling and the day spa kept her well-occupied for nine days while I satisfied my thirst for waves at Lohis, Sultans and Jailbreaks.
The surf team on the island, led by Richard and Amy with local guides 'Smiley' and 'Hoobs', have created the most friendly and inclusive atmosphere. I was only SUP rider in the surf but never had any aggression or ill-feeling and even scored a few hoots and whistles at the waves I picked up. The crowd size varied from zero to twenty at Lohis, depending on how close it was to mealtimes. I had several sessions in clean conditions without anyone else in the water! If you're a surfer who has turned to SUP riding then this is a good place to go. If you're a standup paddler learning to surf - forget it!
So in summary, a great surf trip, friendly vibe, lovely people, good food, plenty of drinks, suitable for partners and whatever you do don't forget your snorkelling gear!
