Just a quick message to all you board sport lovers out there to watch out for the heat. There has been a string of very hot days recently, and looks like there's more to come.

If at all possible, keep your board in a cool well ventilated area during these hot times. If you absolutely can not get your board out of the heat, then I suggest releasing/removing the breather screw (however you absolutely must tighten/replace it before exposing your board to any moisture).

Be kind to your board and keep it cool.

Ride safe,

JB

Well I had my Mana and Glide on the beach in 35 degree heat, after a paddle they went in their bag with a paddle to make air space and were unzipped, no worries in 6hrs of heat! Go Naish!

Query, JB - I get paranoid about the heat & vent. Is it possible to replace the standard vent screw in a 2015 Mana GS with a goretex type so I'd have one less thing to think about?

Why don't all manufacturers put gortex vents in their boards, surely it wouldn't cost that much more ?

You could source one, however I suggest continual checks to ensure it is working. Always the safetest the old Skool way.
1. Keep your board out of the heat.
2. Ensure there is air ventilating (it may not be all that hot, but with no air movement, your board will become extremely hot).
3. If in doubt, open the breather.
4. Always return your breather tight and ready before even the slightest exposure to moisture.

Treat your board like your baby, if you wouldn't leave a child in that heat, do something about it.

I beg to differ, the old school way had a lot of problems:
- each screwing/unscrewing has a risk of damaging the joint
- the risk of forgetting to re-screw before going on the water... been there, done that.

Frankly, I never heard of any issue with the goretex vents, and it is really a huge progress.

PS: I bought a cheap scale to weight luggage (up to 15kg, precise to the gram), and weight my boards when new, so that I have a reference point to check for any water entry

Generally the only fail on the Old Skool is human error. Human error can happen on both std and goretex vents. I strongly recommend not over using your vent screw, in majority of conditions, your board is fine to leave tightly sealed (I actually never release mine, but I am conscious of the heat on my boards).

This whole thread is regarding the very hot weather (hotter than usual) we are experiencing at the moment in Australia, Not to start a debate about Goretex vs Std vents. I basically just want to help everyone keep their boards safe this summer. Thank you for your input as always Colas, but the point is existing boards right now.

Care for your board peeps.

Ride on,

JB

Well, that's exactly my point. There are thus no fails with Gore Tex vents... since you should not touch them ever, there cannot be human errors :-)

And it is very easy to have goretex vents installed on existing boards.

Anyways, when it is hot, never close your board bags except for travelling. I leave a side zipper open from mid-board to the tail.

Some brands don't have vent screws for some reason...boards that I have had with no vent plug have been Deep, Fanatic...one got cooked on my car roof in a bag in Spring in NZ! Suffered massive delamination. The board was ****ed. Not even in super hot summer temps so I was not happy!

I have read 2 main reasons:
- fear of failure: there are a lot of cheap fake goretex vents on the market, it is easy for unscrupulous (Chinese) factories to use them to save some $ at the expense of the SUP brand. It could be a factor for Fanatic, Naish, etc... but of course not for Deep.
- in theory, as water vapor can go through the vent, in hot and humid climates, water could enter the vent as vapor and get trapped by capillarity in the foam blank as in a sponge. As I said, I weight my boards to the gram and did not see evidence of this phenomenon yet in practice.
