After years of oggling, I'm off to the Ments in July and keen on any tips from anyone who's been there to sup before. I'm staying in the Playgrounds area, and if I can snag one at Rifles the whole thing will have been worth it. I've done a fair bit of travelling surfing, but not to sup waves like this, and figure that I'm gonna miss a few essentials if I don't ask.

Anyway, at this stage I'm taking carbon Starby 8'5x29 pro and 8'0"x29 pro boards. Has anyone snapped one of these yet? I've had a few knocks and cracks but no creases, but a few waves over there look a bit like a guillotine.

I'll have the full kit of spares: fins, leggies, kahunas, the lot. And I've surfed a long time and very aware of etiquette, etc.

What do you reckon are the must-haves/land mines? Feel free to email if you'd like to keep it quiet, too.

cheers

Sutures, anaesthetic, antiseptic, pressure bandages, gloves, swabs, scissors, clamps, suction, ..nurse to wipe sweat from brow

But seriously, chafe was our biggest issue take some zinc cream and Bepathenthen ointment (yep I know its for breastfeeding mums but works a teat.. I mean treat)

On a previous surf trip to Sumatra a friend wore skins or bike shorts under his boardies and did not have trouble with chafe - while the rest of us suffered.

Take a short board just in case you get a crowd of shortboarders that hate sup! Epic place though, youll love it!

Tang - years ago somebody told me (after yet another visit to a coral reef) his secret of no coral infections, and even better, I have tried it on several trips since and it works bigtime!
4 weeks before you go take 3 drops of tea tree oil in a glass of water
2 weeks etc
day before you go 3drops again

It is in your system and works from inside out - doesn't stop the cuts or stitches but there is no infection - works for me;

when ever im surfing coral reefs i always take hydrogen peroxide its great for killing any bugs or infection
but don't use it repeatedly on the same cut ,only once or twice

I've got a pair of lycra leggings I used to wear when I rode a shorty - stops the backs of your legs roasting. One day in the Maldives in 2000 I wore them with my electric blue speedoes on the outside, a black rashie and Oakley Waterjacket sunnies. I got a lot of waves that day.....the Brazilians thought I was quite mad. Worked a treat.

I agree - take a short board as an option as its tough to get waves on a SUP when it gets busy.

Here is a vid from last years trip to the Ments.

Chafe doesn't need to be a big issue... Quiksilver Bobby Diamond is the best board-short that I have used, in terms of anti-chafe. Make sure they are a little bit big (not small), for extra room, extra air flow... They stretch also...

Skin care / sun care is very important too...

I would love to take a short board, but my back is cactus, which is why I ride a sup. Then again, if rifles is 6 ft I might have to....
