1. Who else has signed up?

2. What training are you doing?

3. Any advise or recommendations from previous competitors?

Thanks Andrew

Hey Andrew,

I've completed this 4 times, twice on an ocean ski (9:49 best time) & twice on a SUP (12:30 last year).

Will be on the river this year for sure...I'm hooked!

Training - there are many different training schedules you could use, but there is one key for this event - k's under the belt & solo k's as well.

While training, I will set my garmin to calculate the kms for the week with the intention to accomplish 100kms in the week.

Get one 40km - 50km paddle in at night time before the race.

Advice on the river: paddle to your own rhythm - 100kms is a loooong way. Consume calories every hour, avoid stopping at the land crew stops for too long and don't leave your board.

Board selection: I've completed this on a 14' x 25", fastest time has been set on an unlimited board (Note - with assistance from a couple of medium rec's....) This year I will probably stick to 14' but trim the width to 24"

Tip: watch out for the OC6 crews as they come thru....kicks off a nice wash that's interesting to deal with at night time!

I did the race last year for the first time in 14.20ish. I did it as a pair and we spent too long at stops. I agree with limiting your time at pit stops. You don't want your body to cool down too much. As for our training we started by doing 20km paddles each week. We threw in about 5 x 40-50km paddles and did the race quite comfortably. It was a great sense of satisfaction crossing the line. I paddled an ECS 14 x 26 Stealth which gave me good speed and stability. Will I be doing it again......... don't know. Im getting pressure but its a big committment. The race itself is a lot of fun and is at least worth havin a go at once.

Gday Bourko,
This may seem like a stupid question but when you say completing 100 k's per week is that SUP k's or cross training as well? I'm definitely looking at completing and have attempted many years ago on a Spec Ski. I attempted the paddle with someone else and waited for them at a land check point for 45 minutes, seized up and spent the next 25 odd k's in agony before pulling out. My goal will be Keep moving and stay warm.. Hopefully get to the end.

Hey Andrew,
I've done it twice on a sup & believe me it's not the km's you put in but more your mental attitude. It depends on if you want to do it just to finish or if you want to give beating the record a nudge.
The first year I'd done the training but wasn't mentally prepared to paddle off into the darkness by myself at 12.30 in the morning with 55km to go & I had unrealistic goals of 12 1/2 hours to finish.
Last year I hadn't done more than regular 10km paddles but didn't care about my time but just about finishing. Great experience & the more people who do it the more fun it is
