Must be something in the water at the Alley..... and I now join Lacey's alley heart attack survivors club
This afternoon saw me back in the water at the Alley getting a few waves since having a heart attack on May 27th (state of origin game 1) whilst surfing with my school surfing class.
Felt unwell suddenly, lightheadedness, indigestion pain and fatigued at the same time so went in and called my doc who got me to have a blood test and ecg.Got the call back a few hours later telling me I had to get to the hospital ASAP as I had had a heart attack in the surf.(WTF) Initially thought my new 7'8 Minion was giving me a good workout!
3 Stents later from 3 arteries 99,95,92 % blocked I'm good to go again. I never have smoked, don't have diabetes, normal cholesterol and BP and am fit as I am a 49 year old PE teacher. Specialists can't tell me why it happened as no family history either.
Probably the reason I am posting this is to just remind everyone who reads this is to get regular checkups from your GP and listen to your body and any pain above your ribs. Stats show that 50% of heart attack victims don't make it to hospital alive
Big thanks to some of you fellow breezers who have been in contact with me and your support.
See you in the surf
Wazza
Wow - glad to hear you weren't one of the 50%.
You never know what's around the corner... Best to have some fun - before you can't...
Well done wazza on your recovery and welcome back to the waves!
I'm on the opposite side of the coin and now at 42, sh#t scared of having one! Both my mum and dad had massive high blood pressure, dad has had 4 heart attacks and I've now been medicated for blood pressure for about 7 years. Cholesterol is surprisingly good considering I'm a shift worker with a crappy diet at times. Bit overweight and working on that now that I've been supping for a few years, but never smoked and don't drink for last 15 years. I do keep getting regular check ups as I want to see my girls get old and hope I don't have the "here comes a heart attack" gene.
Thats the only way I can explain how healthy people like you fall victim to this horror. Good luck and any advice is greatly appreciated. ![]()
Welcome back. Must be sweeter then ever to be back out on the water after such an experience.
Its noteworthy that all your physical exam items where "ok". I guess like you said, be aware of sudden weird physical feelings.
The best way to avoid heart problems is to choose your parents very carefully.. Congrats on getting back out there.. ![]()
Glad to see you are still literally Living the Stoke. Big wake up call for us all. Nice to see you back in the water yeeeeeeew. Wazza is back .
Great to hear you made it out alive! You are probably better than most of us now with that reconditioned engine! Lol!! Have fun.
FAAAROOUT! Wake call all right! Onya Wazza, great to hear you straight back out there mate! Look after that ticker mate and stay upright!
Thanks to all the fellow breezers for your support and kind words.
Returned to alley for my first surf back the other day and cracked a few waves and am feeling pretty good health wise.
Posted this to bring this disease to people's attention and hopefully that you should get a regular check up from your GP once a year.
Get yourself checked over and watchout for the trans fats ( hidden fats ) in the foods your eat.
Definately enjoy each wave a little more now.
Do the cardio rehab.
A bit over a year ago I had one stent (91% blockage) but no heart attack. Symptoms (breathing difficulties) had been building for 5 months. Should have had the Angiogram earlier.
Dr said to avoid cold water immersions. Tried to research why but failed. I used to think that cold, handled properly, was good for me..
Just saw this on standupzone. Lucky he had his mates arrive just in time:

I can't believe you were crook Warren!!! You have an ideal life, exercise daily and as you said no genetic predisposition to this sort of problem
. Thank heavens this came as a warning to keep getting checked by a doctor and having some important maintenance, the most important part of life is that you stay well for your family and yourself. Red wine instead beer
!! As you no doubt know it can happen to anyone no matter how fit ie. Fitness Guru-Tom Hafey (aussie rules) or in any way ie. Phil Walsh Fitness freak, fellow surfer and Football coach. Lifes to short, Wazza have fun and take care (I bought fins off you about 4 years ago and was a PE teacher as well you gave me great advice on my PSH, thanks)
