Merry xmas and hope everyone is having a great holiday season.

Returned from Byron and some very chilled 1ft SUP surfing to find a couple of cracks in the nose of my board, which is only about 4 weeks old. Have no idea how it happened, although I did let a couple of inexperienced family friends have a go on the board, one of which paddle off close to the rocks where her partner was fishing??

Anyway I'm new to SUP and was wondering if you guys might recommend what needs doing for repair.

I sucked the cracks and theres no water or air flow. Also no swelling or bubbling around the cracks.

These type of dings are very common on hrs board I repair a lot of them, grind the area down to the bottom of the crack it may not go all the way through. Thanked the paint back a little further around the area the replace the glass with some fresh cloth, sand,hotcoat and repeat if needed to get it perfect then spray. Allways do repairs when the air temperature is falling or else it will bubble straight back up or leave you with pin holes.

Do you think this is a good/bad idea considering the type/severity of damage?

Solarez will be fine - make sure you pre heat the board in the sun so air does not push out when setting the res if there is a crack through to the core.

Personly I would never trust solar Rez especially unless you know exactly what you are doing, I have had far to many botched repairs come to me with various attempts of temporary repair and every time it leads to fare more work and a bigger bill for the customer. One of The problems with hrs constructions is the layup can quite often be quite dry and this leads to water spreading a lot easer and faster.

That board will have an EPS (Expanded Poly Styrene) foam core , Solarez is Polyester resin , if even the fumes from it meet the board the Core WILL melt , you will be better of putting tape over the cracks OR using an epoxy product like selleys knead it to seal off the cracks IMO

Jon these cracks are quite common and most often occurs when beginners are learning in the surf and step on the nose to get off the board and the bottom concave of the nose is resting on a rock or two. You will often not here or see the crack until later on that day or week. Its why its best to learn on a 2nd hand board or foam like board like the odysseus. These cracks rarely affect the constitution of the overall board and are best repaired. You can then apply a rail tape like Icon to the nose of the board. After a few weeks you wont even notice the spot anymore.

Hey guys, thanks so much for all the advice.

i showed the images to a guy at a shop here in Brisbane and he recommended to sand slightly then use Epifill. After sanding slightly i could thankfully see that these are very superficial cracks. Have applied the Epifill and am just waiting 24 hrs before sanding. Little worried about the sanding as I left quite a lot of fill.

if you've just done it ,wet your finger and smooth it out ,you may not have to sand it .

then paint it with a white rust kill wattyl spray can ,2 x light coats ...its a good one as it has a built in primer .after 24 hours .and you have the can for next time .

you don't have to paint it ,but it does go a little yellow after a while ,the epifill.

i always rail tape the nose of my boards ,its alway the first thing that hits .

itsbgloss though, the board has a matte white finish???

Sorry I'm such a newb with this stuff.

thats the one .I've used this stuff heaps on my windsurfers ,its tuff ,sets hard as a rock almost as good as 2 pack .
remember not to thick .at a time ,go gloss it fades a little .after a few days ..
if its too glossy for you just sand it lightly after 7 days ,say with 200-300 you will get the matt finish .or rail tape it
and it all looks white with gloss rail tape .....up to you ....

mask tape and paper your colours . .cover all non white surfaces ..in spray range ...before spraying ..

i always say to people ..when they use mine...keep it off the rocks ...then tell them whats its worth,,

Your lucky you have white ..colours are a nightmare.
