Any chance of a an update to results as they come in? Any upsets yet?
Heat 1- Beau, Trevor, Jake
Heat 2- Grant, Jacko, Heath
That's all I have heard...
My tipping goes Beau on a Sprint then Grant Hardyman on a Sprint
Looking pretty good with that tip so far Rod... guess we'll have to wait and see how the final pans out?

Did the wind pickup and offer some help for the semi's? Times look a fair bit faster.

Light seabreeze Ali. Perhaps 8-10 knots.
Just enough to make the start cradles interesting.
Yes the wind was definitely a factor I think. I managed to take 10sec off my time for the first heat
Any vid of the race? Well done to the speed machinesId imagine sprinting 500m was pretty damn hard.
Video later in the week ;)

Posted some pics and results, plus a bit of analysis of the numbers...
www.supracer.com/2014-australian-flatwater-supfest-adelaide-results/
In short: Jacko's time in the 200m wasn't far off Connor's 200m record, though we're still a long way behind C1.
EDIT: I forgot that Lost Mills actually had a rolling start, whereas the SUPfest used a standing start... So given that, Jacko's time is even more impressive and probably at least as quick as Connor's.
Looks like a pretty cool event and all reports from the paddlers suggest it's been extremely well organised. I believe it's also very interesting to take away all the variables (waves, buoy turns, carnage, etc) because then it becomes a pure drag race where the fastest paddler wins (or for the cynics: where the fastest board wins).
Plus from a stats geek's point of view, it's great seeing SUP races accurately timed down to 1/100th of a second.
I was kinda skeptical about this format of SUP racing but I'm starting to come around...

Great overview Chris, looking forward to hearing the competitors thoughts on the format. For the SUPfest, AuSUP utilized the SUPAA board dimension rules. All boards had to comply to minimum width, weight and depth (dug out) specs. The future of this style of racing will be affordable and competitive, without being an 'arm's race' for the narrowest, lightest canoe.
Well done to Jacko and Ange - fastest couple in Australia!
Great event. Wish we could've hung around for the 5km but got a small plane ride to Brazil to get on lol
Thank you to all the organisers and competitors for making us feel so welcome.
Looking forward to next yrs in Sydney i believe.
x
Really fun event and really well run. It was great to see it run so smooth with everything and i'm sure this type of racing will take of in the future and will be a main part of the SUP world along with DW and BOP races which is why our sport is so good!!
Super tight racing and stoked to win the 200m but a huge part of this goes to our new training and having a great board!! Spewing we will miss the 5km race but good luck to all those doing it this afternoon as it will be a tough one!!
Pretty sure the New Fanatic won all 3 divisions today which is unreal and shows to have a fast board it does not have to be tippy!!
Here are a few more pics from the winners today.
Cheers Jacko

Very interesting (and good) to hear.
After all the wild debate when SUPAA proposed those numbers a couple weeks back, I'm glad an organisation can clearly see that this kind of pure flatwater racing is exactly where *some* kind of limits are needed, especially on width.
Glad to hear my apocalypse scenario of SUP morphing into C1 won't happen, at least not in Australia :-D

And quite a succinct quote from Jacko too:

Beau just took out the 5,000m
1st: Beau (29:20.06)
2nd: Will Lee (29:21.31)
3rd: Grant Hardiman: 29:29.49
4th: Heath Meldrum (29:37.43)
5th: Wes Fry (30:04.33)
6th: Trev (30:04.70)
(Jake and Jacko had to leave early)
So the overall results should look like this (assuming it's 8 points for 1st, 7 points for 2nd, etc...)
1st: Beau, 22 points (500m: 2nd; 200m: 2nd; 5km: 1st)
2nd: Trevor Tunnington, 16 points (1st, 4th, 6th)
3rd: Grant Hardiman, 13 points (6th, 5th, 3rd)
4th: Will Lee, 11 points (5th, DNF, 2nd)
5th: Heath Meldrum, 10 points (7th, 6th, 4th)
6th: Wes Fry, 7 points (8th, 7th, 5th)
7th: Matt Stringer, 3 points (10th, 8th, 7th)
8th: Steve Ferguson, 1 point (9th, 12th, 8th)
Paul Jackson, 14 points (3rd, 1st, DNS - ineligible for overall)
Jake Jensen, 11 points (4th, 3rd, DNS - ineligible for overall)
WOMEN'S: Jean Ringrose should take the women's race with 2nd, 2nd, 1st. Georgie Leake runner-up (3rd, 3rd, 2nd)

SUPracer.com recap: www.supracer.com/2014-australian-flatwater-supfest-adelaide-results/
What an awesome weekend!!!! Thoroughly enjoyed every bit if it.
The 500mtr was the hardest as there's no time to rest and it's at least 2.5 mins at 100%!!
The 200mtr was a bit easier but still tricky as the start out of the boot was crucial and the last 50mtrs was always tough.
The 5000mtr was a grind in the heat, some good times put down, the one to note was Jean Ringrose Coyne from Victoria who smoked it in 32mins for the ladies.
Definitely in for the next one if these events!!!
Looked like a great event ill b there next year.
id scrap the 5000m. allowing wash riding goes against the flat water sprint program.
Should be 2000m in lanes!
the 5000m and wash riding would b the only thing that would put me off entering.
It was a pleasure to have participated in Sup Fest last weekend.
The format was fun, well-paced, exciting and friendly. The venue was amazing and the non-sup paddling events were fascinating to watch.
Huge thanks to the Fuzzy & SA Sup Crew for hosting a meticulously run event.
Thanks Deano from Ke Nalu for having the vision to become the major sponsor of this inaugural event and also to Australian Canoeing for integrating Sup into a national title.
