I have been SUPing for 18 months (often 2-3 times per week) and figured I should have a pretty good core. Maybe because I am 6'3" (and I sit at a desk for 12+ hours per day) I have always had back problems. My back has been better since I started SUPing, but I have still struggled.
But a couple of months ago I posted a question about fitness and CarterSUPphysio (and maybe others) suggested reform Pilates. Since then I have had 7 sessions, often twice per week, and I have repeated the exercises at home.
I cannot believe the difference.
I am a new man.
Hard to verbalize, but my back feels like a million bucks. I don't struggle out of bed. I don't have the same aches after a 3 hour session. And every little thing I do during the day feels better.
And I can easily do things at the physio that were very difficult when I started - so whatever core improvements were gained from SUPing, Pilates has made 10X improvements.
So to all you out there who, like me, think their back hates them, try reform Pilates!
(Thanks CarterSUPphysio!)
Hi Jason.
How much is it costing you? Every time I've looked into it, it gets very expensive very quickly.
Great stuff! Glad that it's working out well for you!It can add up pretty quick Helmy, no doubt - pilates is an 'on trend' thing at the moment too. Doing my best cheesy sales line, how much are you willing to pay for your health? Will doing some reformer pilates as a maintenance thing delay having a $10,000 back surgery - with some people yes.. My suggestion would be to at least do some clinical pilates with a physio first - to find out what to do, what not to do etc and then hit up a small sized class where the prices come down and there is less attention one on one... Also, pilates won't work for everyone, but it's 100% worth a try in my experience!
Hi Jason.

I can only echo what Carter said. I paid for a session with the physio, and then a block of five appointments for $300 - but I have private health which reduces the pain. Because I am about to go to the Maldives, I decided to go for another block of five. But with the progress I have made, and the at-home exercise plan the physio has given me, I am confident that I can continue at home. As always, you have to be disciplined, but now that I have been through those guided sessions I know when I am "engaging my core".
But I have paid for quite a few physio sessions in the past when my back "went out". And my back has caused me grief at all kinds of inconvenient times - I have canceled a business trip, and had lots of trips in a fair bit of pain. So I think it is a good investment.
I started doing an on line program with a surf strength coach called Cris Mills.
