I'm off to Bali in September and staying in Canggu for a month. Ride an 8.0 SUP, debating on taking it vs renting and focussing on improving regular surfing skills (advanced SUPper, crappy short-boarder). Any info on SUP appropriate breaks in Canggu or nearby? How's the vibe there in the line ups for SUPs? Thanks!

Just got back from Canggu a couple of weeks ago...take your SUP with you, especially if you are there for a month. Renting won't be worth it over that period of time. You will have to get a SUP from a hire shop up in Sanur and in the end you could replace a board for the amount you would spend in rent.

There are no SUP hire shops around Canggu.

Plenty of breaks - Old Man's as mentioned by Can555, but like plenty of spots around there you won't have them to yourself. Also take the walk up the beach (about 20 mins) to Berawa. There are some good breaks up that way.

If you are there for a month, also head up to Balian and Medewe for a few days. These are great breaks and you will love them on the SUP. I preferred these breaks to Canggu.

As for the vibe, like anywhere....don't snake people, share the waves and the stoke and you will be fine.

Enjoy!

stayed at Berewa in late May this year, had some great waves, no aggro and crowd seems to end up very spread out so easy to find a peak with only a few boards. as per Shi, Balian is a great place for SUPs and picks up heaps of swell, haven't surfed Medewi but have checked it out from shore and does look good.

Surfed there in Feb this year. Nice waves but in the wet season...................would have been healthier surfing in a sewer!!
