Just wondering if any one out there has experienced being bumped by something out in the surf (shark ) ? .Has happened to me four times over the past couple of year, others out on boards, just wondering if SUPers are more prone?

Have had a couple of bumps a few years back but only when 'prone' surfing. Had a 'fly-by' of what I think was a 4-5 ft Bronze Whaler while on a SUP but no bumping

Yeah have seen a decent size pointer while out on the SUP but thinking might be seven gillers as plenty get caught there

When you say "bumped", were you standing or sitting? Did it knock you off balance?

I have always wondered what I would do if I had a close encounter with a shark, especially one that bumped into me to check me out. Maybe it is a good sign that it swam off and did not satisfy its appetite... (I have seen plenty scuba diving but they are not the bitey kind.)

Was standing,once when I was paddling into a wave but bump wasn't hard enough to knock me off.

A very long time ago around 1981 we were surfing at Phillip Island and we had a new guy with us who wanted to surf more. We paddled out at the Penguin Parade, you could back then until dusk and we saw him struggle to get beyond the shore break.
Soon he sat on the beach and returned to the car, when asked why he said he felt a thud on his chest and when the water cleared up bobbed a Seals head!! He never surfed again, LOL??We all thought it was very funny but he could not see the humour???

That'd put the wind up ya for sure,seal was prob trying to get away,hit him and slowed it down,did the shark a favour

Ha ha saw that,saw one jump over the front of my mates board.

I've had a shark go down behind me so I'm told, I've had a really big bump under my mal. I've had my foot clamped in the mouth of something large. Could not see what, as water too dirty. No damage. Have been stalked all the way back to shore by a large shark after paddling over it on short board. Two weeks later huge ruckus under my board paddling for wave turned to see 2 metre shark in wave. Finally 4 years ago fell off standup onto very shallow sandbank which gave me concussion which led to stroke and a couple of weeks later a heart attack and open heart surgery. Now that was a bump!

Happened at Burleigh point. I'm kinda good and still surfing on paddle board. You think I'd know better. It's all good.

Holy crap! I hope my wife never reads this!

On a very misty morning a couple of weeks ago I was standing on my SUP, the only one out at North Nuzza (Narrawallee Beach near Ulladulla on the South Coast of NSW), when an 8ft juvenile white just cruised up about a metre away from me and then did a right turn when I slapped my paddle in the water and headed out to sea. Weird I was very calm just watching the majestic beauty of this death torpedo but catching a wave in toon forever. Surfed there the next day because let's face it we are in their territory so we are at their mercy. All I can think now is thank goodness I wasn't on the short board because I wouldn't have seen it.

That was a kook slap for paddling out through the break / line up . They had the wave and were surfing it.

Going down the line on my windsurfer when I was young hit something that threw me of my board. came up with sail and board on one side of me and a very stunned shark on the other. Shark took about 30 sec to come to and buggered of really quick. Pleased he didn't take revenge.

They are all around me everyday.... big Whites.
One was between me and the beach last week
But so far no bumping....
although a big one did rub up against a longboard friend.... all down his body, like a wet dog.
Dude couldn't talk when he got out of the water. He surfed the same spot the next day

Mr Big got "bumped" when an 11ft'er chomped his board.... actually, he said it was more like being hit by a truck.
He surfed the next swell as well.

Don't think I'd like to get bumped....

Never hit one surfing, clipped a couple wave sailing local river mouth though.

October school holidays surfing my old stomping ground of boomers, lots ( actually noticeably more whales than previous years ) of whales to keep you entertained breaching and slapping, and some ridiculously close to shore. Anyway typical boomers/ seals area full of life fishies, dolphins, people, I looked over to my right paddling out and at first glance thought old mate dolphin had caught a few more waves but hang on he's not swimming with that usual swagger, he's swimming with side to side strokes, I watched as he swam north and seaward only about 10m from me, thinking keep going mate keep going. He was about 7'-8' . Funny when you actually can see it is different than when you think you have seen one. Same beach back in the 80's I had the closest encounter to an over friendly dolphin juvenile, he was catching a wave and flew straight over me as I was sitting watching the pros in action, thank god he didn't hit me

Gromes make an awful bump when you hit them too.

Was up at rainbow beach on the weekend and had a bronzie 5 m away from me cruising the shoreline through the lineup of surfers. I paddled on top of it pretty much trying to steer it out to sea. It came back 10 minutes later so I went in and had lunch before he did ha!

2 years ago was paddling out at the local break just doing laps of beach no surfing, no one else in the water swimmers or surfers, shark swims in cruising the shoreline, 3-5 feet grey nurse or bronze whaler, never surfaced, never popped the fin out, followed it for 10 minutes, You can see them way more easily on a sup.
