that's a good watch DJ. Goes to show that it takes time to get there. Cant just be a good runner or "fit" and expect to jump straight on and kill it ha....
Gives a bit of an insight as to how energy sapping paddling in open ocean chop can be too.
Unfortunately, much like my stamina on the water, I just couldn't push myself hard enough to watch to the end of the movie.
I suspect they jumped on the boat for the last half of the distance. At the speed they were going they'd be lucky to make it before the light went for filming. They don't actually claim to have paddled it all, even on their knees, and they looked suspiciously fresh at the end. Strange decision to do it on a 28" wide 12-6 board, but I guess they wanted to make sure that it looked as hard as possible. They needn't have bothered because it looked pretty much impossible for someone who hadn't trained specifically for that event, probably for several months at least. It certainly gives you even more respect for the people who do it, especially solo.
Their names don't feature in the official results - I'd reckon pretty impossible to do with that amount of dismounts, mind you they did seem to string together a couple of paddles strokes whilst on their knees, so who knows if they really completed it - great story though!
That's like a horror story. As soon as they got up on the board for the first time, it was clear they were not going to be able to do it. Mind you, even for someone interested in downwinders, that M2O channel crossing looks like not much fun at all.
Thanks David,
I think it was more about the adventure of the challenge (as stated in the first part of the movie), not so much about the ability to master the event.
They did very well.
I gotta give them a big thumbs up!![]()
I remember my first paddles in a calm ocean.... I don't care how foolish they were.... what they accomplished is amazing.
Just standing in those conditions would be near impossible for most intermediates, and they put in a lot of miles regardless.
That was one heck of a week of workouts.... they hung pretty tough considering.
Cool insight into a lot of watermen along the way.
