Planning a family trip to Byron Bay in September school holidays.
I'm a crap SUP surfer, 2 daughters beginner level.
Don't want to get in anyone's way.
Don't need anything more than knee high.
Where is best to stay to walk to SUP friendly surf spots, and / or flatwater (not asking for much!)
Any places to avoid?
Looking at accommodation options / locations.
Any advice appreciated
Hey Noz, Byron is a pretty cool place but you will find that on any school holidays it is very busy.
There is lots of accommodation from campgrounds to luxury apartments. Quite a bit is within walking distance of the beach.
If you are a novice surf SUPper, the Pass will be good for you as it is a long right handed on a sand bar. A point of warning though, don't sit on the outside of the point, it is very local oriented and can have a heavy vibe. The good thing is that an be as many as five take off points, so if you sit inside away from the main take off point you should get a reasonable share of waves. Normal surf etiquette applies.
Wategos has a nice wave but is the local longboard crews hangout. I would steer clear of Broken Head on a SUP.
apart from that there is miles of beach in town and at Tallows but this can be heavy. There is very little flatwater around Byron, best is Lake Ainsworth at Lennox Head or the river at Brunswick Heada. A good run is Mullumbimby to Brunswick it takes. About 2 hours non stopmdown river.
There are heaps of restaurants, walking tracks, beaches, beautiful Swedish backpackers etc etc etc
Have fun.

I taught my girlfriend to sup at (missingham ? Bridge) Ballina in front of the skate park, perfect slow waves for a learner sup..
