Hi fellow suppers,

my naish board must have taken on water water because I took it out and it has what appears to be water or damp damage or mould or rotting on the bamboo. Is there any easy fix or is board rubbish now? No other damage board isn't warped or bubbling and still floats like it did from day 1. Any advice is appreciated.

take the vent plug out leave in the sun for a couple days if it bubbles water out of the vent plug turn upside down look for any dings etc while ya at it .see what happens hey

Just wondering if the board was stored in a board-bag?

Hard to tell from the photo, but is there a small area in the lacquer that could be a little "thin" or maybe have a few bubbles in it?
Osmosis may have set in if it's been left wet in a board bag and the moisture "sucked" into the lacquer then into the balsa..

If the bung out/in the sun trick doesn't sort it, you may have to try and drill a couple of very small pin holes around the area to let the moisture evaporate then get someone to re-lacquer it..

There is definitely some pinhole or crack that is letting water in.
In your pics we see the white of the fiberglass, meaning that either the glass job was bad (not enough resin) and there are pinholes, or that some shocks made the glass flex and come loose from the resin, creating micro-cracks.

It is too late for a small repair. The water in the wood will not come out. Your options:

- if still under warranty, and the problem are pinholes (no visible cracks found), have it replaced.
- use it as is, it will take time for the board to be unusable
- blindly apply some sealing layer: hotcoat, layer of marine varnish
- wet the area with soapy water, expose to the sun and see if you can detect the leaks, then seal them.
- sell it now, as is
- Remove all the wood layer and redo a proper glassing, either in wood or yellow-painted. May cost more than just selling the board and getting a new one (maybe a 2nd hand one).

yes unfortunately I always stored on the bag with the vent plug loose and retightened every use.

Although the boatd is quite old (purchased in roughly 2010) I may have only taken it out 8-10 times max. Apart from being stored mostly in the bag it has been well liked after.

I use to store a fanatic allwave in boardbag with zip open...washed and wiped down after every surf. 1 year later osmosis set in down rails and started chipping. I use a boardbag every time I go surfing but remove from bag and store on racks - no direct sun or board bag.

Surely if you wash and dry your board fully after each use it is safer in a board bag (if kept indoors) ?

Yeah I got that osmosis with a Naish and a Fanatic. Got a Jimmy Lewis now, no osmosis, no nonsense

I keep mine in board bags, but they are always washed in freshwater and dried for 3/4 days before putting them back in their bag.. I do leave them wet in the bags if I've had a late PM/early AM surf, but then wash/dry/store.

I do know quite a few folks who just leave wet boards in bags for weeks on end, sometimes you see the damage similar to above and sometimes not.. sometimes you see all sorts of dodgy ding-stick applied repairs pealing off and the guys don't seem to care about it..

I'd take that board to a decent repair shop, sounds like you don't use it that often so maybe they could fit it in around a bust schedule over a few weeks.. try that.. IMO

Why would you buy boards that are prone to do this in the first place ?


Sounds like way too much effort owning these SUPs from comments above re drying storing etc

perhaps a brand change might solve the problem ?
