I am off to Bali in June for a surf trip to Berawa and Balian. Having moved away from prone surfing to the SUP I am taking the actually taking the longboard for ease of transport and due to the fact that all of the others are going to be on LB's (peer pressure
).
This leads me to the following questions as I have not been to Bali for years and am not familiar with these two areas.
- are there SUP hire places at either of these two locations?- what is the general attitude towards SUP riders at these places?
Cheers for any feedback and advice!!
Not sure about Berewa (heading there myself in late May for the first time), Last time in Balian 2 years ago there was no one hiring SUPs but may have changed, great SUP wave tho, as long as you like lefts. Catches a lot of swell so can really go off. Its normally pretty casual there with a few take offs to ease the pressure, if you go out early it can be pretty quiet as is a bit of a hike from Kuta etc so the day trippers take a while to get up there. Best shot re hire is to get a decent board from Jankie in Sanur rather than some of the other dodgy ones that seem to be available for hire in other places, you can find him if you do a search for Bali Stand Up Paddle.
look in the search page for bali topic there is loads of good information on there from guys doing trips..
I was there last year took my own board with out a trouble and am going again in october and will be taking 2 boards for sure.. all the good hire boards are over in sanur the rentals around kuta etc are big pigs. sup is fine over there the beaches are unreal for a sup this year im going to hit the Bukit peninsula more Im traveling with some short boarders that rip and know the are well so should be fun..
I was in Balian in oct 15 no sup hire that I could see. Balian beach café great food, couple of busted arse longboards for 5 bucks a day. I surfed the rights more than the lefts. Medewi had quality Longboards for hire similar price no sups. Big sign at Medewi surf club saying sups banned. Asked the question of the local crew and they said they only were hard on sups when it was crowded. SUPS to the shoulder of the line up haha.
I don't believe you would have dramas at these breaks.
Regularly go to Balian definitely no sup hire there, awesome place to surf and just hang out very mellow vibe, you'll have no drama riding a sup out in the line up.
I've only ever taken my short board but have seen many sup riders out there
Enjoy it's an awesome part of the world
Good on you folks!
Thanks for the feedback. I was searching the forum trying to find specifics about these two areas with regards to SUP's. I think I will take my SUP instead and just go the unpopularity vote with the others in the group. Should be a good trip, I will give feedback on my return!
Putu @ Warung Titties - Semawang Beach , basically in front on Hyatt Reef
Putu has a few boards but also has a boat to take you wherever you want
He is also a great bloke who also surfs
I would also highly recommend Jankie
In sanur at the moment
He is helpful friendly and has good boards
Good on you folks!

I am sure my opinion is worth nothing, but you should take your sup. Life's too short to miss out on a good time. If you wanna sup then you should sup.
I'm in Berawa now staying in the legong kereton an awesome place on beachfront. No decent sup hire here or echo beach I would def bring your own I bought straps with me to tie down on transport. Surfs been pumping and i can paddle away from crowd.
I hired a 9'0" 30" wide from Bali Wave Hunters in July 15. They are from Jimbaren but delivered to Legian and only had leave credit card as a deposit not cash in US $. Good board and would highly recommend.
I'm going to Bali in June, 1 week Kuta reef, 1 week in Balian. As I ride a 10'8" cruiser I've decided to go inflatable for ease of transport. See you out at Balian, look for the old grey dude on a blowy, lol!
