Were they actually using their paddles - or required to carry them as a handicap?

agree.. not much point of using a paddle in those waves.. a hindrance, really, to good tube riding. Bit like having a peewee 50 race around the Phillip Island motogp circuit.... lots of fun for sure, but....

I am currently on the north shore and have been watching some of the biggest swells in years hitting the area. Watched Pipeline 2 days ago and saw a some insane short board surfing in 20/25 ft surf.
Plenty of snapped boards and nasty wipeouts.

No sups anywhere to be seen as swell way too big and you would never get through the shore dump which is about 6/8 ft of solid whitewash.

Got some 6/8 ft surf at Makaha point on the west coast which was all about my 7"8 could handle as most of the other local guys were riding 10 ft plus sups to get into the waves earlier.

The guys in this video have got balls as the reef will shred you if you mess up. I have posted a few shots of the smaller day at pipeline yesterday.

Kelly Slater was out at Waimea bay getting a few warm ups for the Eddie Ahku

and how it can be surfed....properly -

I SUP and prone surf but some places and conditions favour one over another, simple.
