following the link from Surfing NSW
http://www.surfingaustralia.com/nsw/news-details.php?id=5251
it says National SUP title will be held in currumbin in november 2015, on the goldcoast in 2017 and 2018
Any idea where they are holding it in 2016?

Great to see they are sharing the event around... briefly. Perhaps NSW in 2019, Gold Coast for the 5 years after that, then Sunshine Coast for a year, then who knows... somewhere around 2030 we may even see it in SA or Vicco.

They'll have to seriously ramp up the O/50 and O/60 allocations by then (and maybe put some ramps on the beach too)

^ That would be awesome if that was the case Al Hunter.

Can anyone confirm the dates for Currumbin this year my info was that it is October 14th > but now I keep hearing November, I want to come over but I have to plan well in advance.

Actually the link/dates in the first post is the same as the surfing Australia website.

Looks like I had better change my holidays to November.

King of the Cut is ALREADY the de facto national championship and the most important, most revered and most challenging race in Australia. Who cares who wins that provincial race out of Currumbin when it's going into the wind and then up the creek? Not exactly filling people's bucket lists, is it? King of the Cut on the other hand is an internationally recognised event, open to all competitors and everyone wants to do it.

I think the same person won both last year.

Which just goes to show the good paddlers will usually win no matter what the race conditions are.

I am in my 50's and no where near in that league but enjoy my racing and did compete in the 3 races, The Doctor, King of the Cut and also the Nationals at Currumbin last year.

Yes having an upwind leg for the Nats was 'interesting' but I still enjoyed it, we all have to race in the same conditions and it did make the downwind run home rewarding.

In some ways having mixed conditions in a race, downwind, upwind, downwind, a surf break to negotiate and flatwater (the creek finish) makes it interesting as everyone has their strengths and weaknesses.

However my main focus is to have fun so if I could only do one I have no doubt which one it would be...... KotC for sure!!

If the dates on the Surfing Australia website are correct it is going to be a busy 3 weeks this year

National Marathon 22nd November
The Doctor 29th November
The KotC 5th December

It seems crazy to me that (what I regard as) argueably the 3 biggest SUP races in Australia are on consecutive weeks however I just appreciate that hard working volunteers, sponsors etc put these events on and we have the choice to compete in any one or all events.

Bring it on!!!

The more I think about this the more it looks like I will have to choose 2 out of three of these events.

I am definitely doing the KotC but it is going to be difficult to get my board from one side of the country to the other for the Nationals and the Doctor.

It is never easy getting a 12'6 and 14' board across to Currumbin from WA for the Nationals but I have managed to do it for the last 2 years, (I actually took some long service leave and drove 11,000kms in total last year, yes there was a few surf detours)

The WA crew sent their boards over and back in a container last year and although I sent my 14'er back in it I am not sure when the container arrived back in Perth as I didn't arrive back till a couple of weeks later.
I am pretty sure it wasn't picked up in Qld till Tuesday or Wednesday and took at least a week.

So rather than miss The Doctor (which for us in WA for the last couple of years has been a qualifying race for the Nationals the following year) I will probably have to pass up the Nationals in Currumbin.

I am sure this is going to make it difficult for others as well that were intending on trying to do all 3 events, not only with logistics of boards but also time off work etc.

november is interesting. could jag a south run.

but in reality the only really consistant winds in our area is sep oct, nov is ne winds and the best place is the tweed coast but it can be tricky getting out and in.

there is over 30 kms of it

i was one of a few last year who left going in a bit late and ended up out the front of hasting rocks.

gave the old heart rate a fair workout trying to get a bullet in i can tell you .

its kind of not workable for a race

That's disappointing that the Nationals is on the 22/11 not only because of the timing for the WA crew and others that will want to compete in all three events but for that time of the year for the surfing events.

A couple of years ago after an ordinary turn out to the Nationals the event was moved to October to allow for a greater opportunity for all competitors to attend, ie less busy time prior to xmas, last years attendance was better but the surf conditions were pretty ordinary.....

The Sup surfing National event has got to be held at a time of year that will increase the chances of conditions worthy of such an event. The sooner the 10ft mal sup category is included in the Nationals together with the existing short sup event then that could warrant a separate Nationals event for a stand alone Surfing event.

At the moment the Nationals event timing is only catering for the 12'6 and 14 ft events IMO.....

Judging by what Lacey says above, I don't see how the 12'6" and 14' events in late November are being catered for either. Obviously it's convenient for someone's schedule because the SUP community was fairly unanimous in agreeing that the date in early November a couple years ago was too late in the year and too close to Christmas holidays for people to get time off. So what do they do? Move the event even closer to Christmas holidays.

The other clash that this date has created is the close proximity to Merimbula. That one is not one of my favourite events but a lot of people seem to like going so once again, Surfing Australia is competing with existing and well supported SUP events. I hope they know what they're doing.

As Kent has pointed out good luck getting a competitive team from WA this year. I know I would rather stay at home and not put $1500 into the QLD economy to miss a race in my own backyard because my board was on the back of a truck half way across the Nullabor. I also know the only reason the Jackovich bros went last year was because they moved it to an earlier date meaning more chance of waves.

It may very well go the way of the World Championship Tour supporting the existing local races that already exist and are accessible for everyone. Thinking along the lines of the Forster Island Challenge, Harry's Paddle and from what I can gather they are working on a similar event somewhere in QLD. Creating a full series rather than just a one off.

The only thing left out is the surfing side of things, but we are only 2 weeks away from the Stand Up Surf Shop classic at Rottnest, which is shaping up to be a great event with Justin Holland and Kai Bates already confirmed.

Is the Nationals late to cater for the top paddlers international schedule to allow them to be on home soil to compete ?? I have no idea just thought that could be a reason

you could leave your new board there that would suit me better and ride your old one in perth
The guys from the east will have the same problem we all may need to pitch in for a truck to bring direct would only take a few days then direct

Maybe doing a board assist is a good option.
When you guys come to east coast we lend you boards
Then when we come to WA you have boards for us
There has to be a lot of people not doing these events that we could borrow boards
Maybe also teeing up house share to cut costs also both ways.
Well if anybody interested happy to be involved!!!!!

No, but it's the weekend before Merimbula, which might seriously impact the leave-pass situation for a few punters.
