ok so what sort of response am I going to get here if I put in a cheeky beg for a cad file (preferably shape 3d)for a performance sup for me and my local shaper (experienced at shaping every other kind of board except sup) to play around with. Would it be akin to coming on here and insulting all your mothers? or would I be bombarded with offers of help?

My board history is prowave 8'5 then hokua LE 7'6 which I still have now.... however as I'm about 155 pounds (not including wetsuit) at 109 litres and over 29 inches wide the hokua is not really pushing my boundaries and also I find it gets a little hard to hold in a bottom turn at my weight when it gets bigger.

If I lived in California then I'd simply go out and buy an infinity blurr 7'7 x 27.5" or something like that but over here I dont have that option. I want to support my local shaper who is a good friend but at the same time I want to get a great board and not end up with an experiment gone wrong :)

Why don't you save yourself a heap of grief and buy something from the starboard pro range? Mainly for a couple of reasons ,1 customs can be hit an miss even with the best shaper at the helm, 2 there really hard to resell if your not happy with the end result. I'm not saying don't go for it, but when a company has done all the leg work for you ,it silly to not have a quick nose and a demo first goodluck Happy supping

I guess no professional shaper will share his designs, of course. But amateurs may want to share their design, provided you share back: for instance sharing back your enhanced designs, or having some recognition (e.g: your local shaper labels their design by the name of the contributor)?

Your best bet would be to bring a board you like to your local shaper to measure and enter in his shape software, and then play with it with his experience and your desires. Most shapers learn this way, by studying others work, and developing their own style.

As tortise says, the resell value wont be great, but the feeling of having a unique board made by a friend is worth it in my opinion, if you can allow it.

As an amateur surfboard shaper, i did use normal CAD 2dimensions for surfboards years before and then did draw my first SUP with 2 dimensions CAD . Now i graduate to the 3D software and buy a full design version of S3D time life .
What i want to mean is 3D software are necessary technologies to draw SUP because of the internal scheduling of the center of flotation.
This center of flotation is providing by subtle drawing changes .So i believe handcraft man as a shaper are in front of his stand can hardly adjust the right center buoyancy position to the maxwidth and keep shaping the more surfing characteristics parameters.
And to reply to Tortise , once you get in these kind of subtle adjustments , custom shape are the only way to get something unless you know what you want and the hand shaper able to translate in the foam what you want

Kami, that looks very nice indeed. Many thanks for sharing! Initial thoughts on what I'd alter for me (and I'm no expert) would be to make it 7'7" ish and sleet out a bit of volume from the nose. Have you built this for real yet?

I did'nt build this shape. I just draw from a bit of the californian Bluff you tell about and for the most of the draw, this is my experience of surfing my dozen of SUP home made.
I can draw to 7'7", about taking off some volume from the nose, this is up to you but you will lose paddling abilities . On the other hand you will have more surfing abilities , plus you will drop quickly in the wave-> steeper take off.
Honestly, don't do it , stay on 7'4" because it's suitable to your 70kg , thinking it's "super powered shortboard", 7'7" would be an other kind of board away from the Bluff SUP you want.
