What happens if you go out on a board beyond your ability?

Keep trying, paddle continuously into the chop. Catch a few waves and after you have surfed the board on a wave a few times they always seem easier to stand on while waiting for the next set.

If you keep going out on it - eventually your ability will catch up...

...just to throw in a different opinion.

depends on how much beyond your ability!! going from something like a 9.6 170 litre board to a 9.1 140 litre board is easier than going from that same 9.6 to a sub 8 foot sub 100 litre board. I no longer use the ability criteria, i prefer the fun factor, when a board gets too small that it stops being fun and becomes hard work, i go back to a bigger board.

It depends how far beyond your ability. But I'd say the same thing as with all the ocean skis that people bought that were beyond their abilities. A small percentage of people persist going for lots of swims before eventually mastering it. A whole lot more sell and buy something they can manage and actually have an enjoyable experience. The remainder hang them up in the garage for the birds to perch on.

I did a demo paddle on an SIC pro lite that was way beyond my ability and weight range. I remember thinking what an unpleasant experience and couldn't wait getting back to the beach after falling off a bunch of times.

Never sell your old boards when stepping down in size. You can hop back on one and regain your confidence.

Just want you need. People on the beach laughing, a running commentary on how hopeless you are and to top it off posted on the web.

Don't know about you, but I keep doing it again.
And again.
Every day.
