Sunova Speeed fins
Hi there. What fins are you using on your Sunova Speeed? The Speed has a lot going on at the tail. Fin selection must be important and there is now great collective wisdom and experience out there with respect to the Speeed shape. I am 70 kg and using stock Sunova 94s (4.75 base 4.75 height) up front and a smaller Protec fin (4.3 base and 4.5 height) on the back.(see photo). After a wicked fin slash last year rather than sanding the leading edges I am taping them. Your input would be much appreciated.

I have found that I like my Speeed relatively under finned, close to that Josh Kerr 7.0 or a touch smaller, which at my 103 kg is actually not all that big. I think the channels add a bit of bite, letting you drive the board well without adding big fins.

i use shapers AM2, sides are near exact shape to the stock fins that came with my 7'11, centre is smaller by about 5mm.
bit more flex in them to stock glass ones which are quite stiff.
work well, tho so did the stockies but the bright orange looks pimp.

I have not tried smaller fins in the 7'3" or 7'8" Speed. At 75kg and 174cm usually prefer larger templates for my size. Had no stock fins at first and used Shapers S9 sides and S7 rear. Bit more area all round especially tip and more tweak in materials than stock fins.
Big fins compared to what you guys mention.
The design of the speed has lots of hold but I still felt the bigger fins worked a treat especially when stomping the back foot and getting right up on edge. Production fins of 105 sides and 92 rear works great as well. Had both set ups from ankle high to double overhead and stoked with both.
Happy days.

I think too that the upper channels forward fronts fins add a lot of rail bite. My idea on fins's position is the fact they dig the rail in the water more than holding the whole board in the direction you want to go.
So I agree with you when you like those fins with minimized aeras when they are combined with a upper side channels.

I have an 8'8" and an 8'5" depending on conditions I use C-Drive fins (can't remember the size but they are purple) for small playful conditions. This fin remains loose while still providing drive, however when it gets big (solid OH+) the board feels under fined. I like to use the FCS ARC large on the side with a medium in the rear for the bigger days, this fin set up feels predictable offering great drive and release when needed.

I'm using a 8' single fin, haven't been out in anything bigger than shoulder high but its performed well, nice down the line speed and nice and loose on the back foot

Dean. That is one wicked big fin!!

I appreciate all all the fin responses. I was out today in 3-4' waves. Enjoying the Speeed!

I've an 8'10 Speeed and using both the stock 105's all round and now trying the 94's out of my new Flow 8'7.
I've yet to surf the Speeed with the 94's in anything bigger than knee high loamy mush, but have noticed it feels a bit "lighter" when I stomp on the tail.. time will tell and it the 94's work well I'll invest in some rather than use the Flows.

FCS performance core . fins all the way .
too many choices ... find them better than some shapers .
seem to be faster .? thinner .compared to some and a little more flex .
.maybe just buy a side bite set ,see if it makes a difference .
plastic fins are average .

Ive got a set of Sunova 83s i think, got em with my 8.10 speed and they are an excellent size for it.Im 85 kegs and 180 high, these are the most suitable sunova size ive tried but am using C Drives as well.I find the stock fins work better for me in the bigger waves here in Vicco but loving the C Drives in smaller stuff, finding really good release off the top with them.Dont mind the Ole Von Piros mix as well, guess you gotta play with em all but not get too Frugged up about it.

Well, I went out yesterday on the Speed 8'10 with the 94's in it and even though the waves were very small the board felt just lighter at the tail. Got a little bit of slashy turns, so looking forward to exploring smaller fins, so I've just ordered some FCS PCC mediums and I'll stick the Flow 94's back in the board.

Off to a wavy spot in a couple of days, should be good to test out my new fins.

After quite a few of you liking less fin area I tried it. One surf and back to lots of area. Each to their own but I love the lift and hold of the bigger templates in this board.
Such a fun ride and I am able to pull off moves and take lines I have never done on any other craft.
I added these examples.
The fourth photo is s screen grab of a not full tilt square bottom turn on a small wave. As you might see already getting not much fin in the water. Add a bit more oomph and a couple of feet to the wave I think the larger outside fin, for me, is really needed. Enjoy.

Wow! Great surfing Funnsurfn! Something to aspire to. I suspect it has only a little to do with the size of your fins and more to do with skill and ability. You really get a great view of how thinned out the nose and rales of the Speeed are from those shots. Thanks for posting.

Cheers

I would have loved to have had a box centre fin on my 9'5 Speed just to try it with a larger centre fin. I find i'm not in control of the tail in washy surf . I'm not as fit and strong as I used to be and just would like a bit more stability at times.

These are the fins I'm now using on my 8'10 Speeed. They're FCS PCC 7's and have loosened the board up nicely. With the stock 105's in the board has lots of drive, but I wanted to loosen up the back end to slide out a bit more since this is a big'ish board and the channels work like side bites as it is.
Lots more experience in waves to come, but so far in waist high mush the boards turning really nicely and still tracking well until I push out my back foot to slide.

You may try a Twin + trailer setup (like the Mark Richards one).
Try to avoid thick fins, thick big fins seem to slow a lot the boards. But the MR and Harley Ingleby I tried are nice and fast.
Or you can use C-Drives in front.

If the MR trailer is too small for you, just move up progressively in size for the central fin until you find your sweet size.
