Hey guys, not sure if anyone can shed any information about James caseys new signature model, the sunova flash?
Looks like an awesome, progressive board.
Does anyone know:
When it's coming out?
What sizes are coming out?
Etc
Cheers dan

Cheers dan
This just in..... a sneak peek at the "Flash" meeting Picasstino
yup... that's Tino hisself painting up "Flash" #1
Hey 1fox,
The board comes standard as a 5 fin..
The reason you can't see the plugs in the video is because this was James's original board, the same one he is riding above.. The board went so well from the first proto there was no need to make more versions before hitting the go button for production.. So instead of making a new board for Jimmy with the new flash colors and carbon, we added it to the one he already had because he loved it so much..
The extra plugs are currently hiding under the carbon..
Cheers, Dylan
I'm currently looking at the 8'7" flow and asked how AA how the flash differs from the flow. His reply, "much more pulled in nose and tail. It is basically a cross between the Acid and the Flow, borrowing the sound predictability of the FLOW with the rippability of the ACID". James added "More spring off the top, holds speed better and just a better all round high performance board. I'd use the flash for 90% of conditions".
Now I have a dilemma as I've paddles the 8'7" flow, so I know I like that shape and only have till the end of July to make a decision if I want to put in an order with AA in time to get a discount.
Can't wait to see this board in the shops.
Little off the flash subject.
But what is the comparison in weight of sunova board models compared to the similar boards in brands like naish, starboard, jp and even ozzy brands like deep ocean boards?? Cheers dan
That's a real can of worms...
In general i've found Sunova's to be a little heavier than other brands carbon boards, but lighter than their wood deck boards.
You don't buy a Sunova cos it's the lightest, you buy it cos it's so smooth on the face and has a really bomber construction...among other things like outline shape and look etc...
Wow looks mint..what is the difference between the 8'3 flash and say the 8'7 Acid being similar volume? in terms of performance on wave and stability characteristics..thanks
Once you get down to these super-light-weight boards you are talking 100's of grams. I don't weight boards any more. I just pick them up and they feel 'right', I surf them. The feel of the board on different waves in various conditions is what really matters. Speed, Flex, rail-to-rail and the ability to absorb chop all come together to give you the 'feel'. It is a bit like the Volume - the numbers do not tell the full story. Durability is also a big issue for me as we put over 40 boards in demo each year and how they come out the other end means a lot to anyone who is progressing and likes to turn over boards and upgrade.

For what it is worth, I had the 8'7 Flow, and liked it a lot, but the 8'10 Acid is now my go-to board. I really enjoy riding the Acid. I happen to have the 8'7 Acid (but conditions need to be good and I have to keep my kg's down) and I have the 9'1 Acid (for when it is really lumpy). I have no idea about the Flash.

Get the Flash! The Flow is a nice and proven but generic shape and the Acid rips and is remarkably versatile so if the Flash is a amalgam of those boards it sounds like it will be a great board!
Thanks for the advice. I drove past the shop to put my deposit down on the flow but the guy wasn't there and I had the kids in tow so couldn't wait around.
Having read the last two comment I'll think about it overnight before going back. I put this little spreadsheet together to see if it can help me make a decision.
I'm currently on a deep custom that I've had for about 5 years (still in amazing shape), but having knee and back issues and at 6'2 tall and weighing 90kg. I was looking for something a little more comfortable out back but that still performs well. A little extra width than the current 29" should do it.
I have tried the Flow and felt it turned really well. The shape allowed for great manoeuvrability when on a wall and I found it much easier to turn on my backhand than my current board. My only criticism of the flow was that it felt it lacked a bit of down the line speed which seems to have been addressed with the flash, so maybe that's the go.
The flash sounds great, but I just wonder how it performs at the large size I am looking at. I guess I am just wary of laying down 2k on something I've not tried. Would be great to get more feedback re the flash, but I only have 2 days to decide if I want to save some wedge.
CooWeee, the pics of the flash STC posted look amazing.
Just a guess, but the pad without the swirls looks good, assume they went for single colour to avoid a clash with the graphics?
No handle ?
Jimmy's personal board and at that size he did in factbask for no handle. :-) us normal ppl will happily be happy with the handle.

Hey mbuz, I am also 93 kg and 6'3. I love my 8'10 Acid, but I also have the 9'1 Acid when the conditions are a bit challenging. If you want something that is "a little more comfortable out the back", then the 9'1 will give you that, but you have to work a little harder to turn it. I find the 8'10 Acid pretty stable, but if it is lumpy/choppy, then it does become challenging. But on a wave, I think it is fast and maneuverable. (I also have the 8'8 and 8'10 Speeeds, and used to have an 8'7 Flow - and I also have an 8'7 Acid, but you need better conditions and stay hungry.)
So, I think that if you don't want to gamble, the Acid should work for you, and the Flow is a safer choice (a little thicker and fuller in the nose, and thus you can go a bit shorter).
Thanks for the advice. I've put a deposit down on the 8'9 flash. Will have to wait a couple of month for it to arrive but will post a review once I get it.
Looks interesting, I'm looking to step down from a 8'2" speed, I wonder what the stability of the 8' Flash model would be like compared to the Speeed.
The Sunova branding on that JC "Flash" looks so much classier than the usual.
I have a Speeed - love the board but the big Sunova decals detract from the beauty of the construction.
Hope the new branding becomes standard.
The feel of the board on different waves in various conditions is what really matters.
One factor that also makes for a different feeling for boards with the same weight on the scale is its repartition:
Some boards have a light core (ultralight foam blank) with an heavy skin (thick sandwich), others a heavy core and a light skin (denser EPS, or PU - Polyurethane blanks - boards, with a simple glassing). It results in a different "swing weight".
light-core boards will feel more lively and snappier, heavy-core ones will feel smoother with more drive. Actually, a lot of what surfers often criticize in the feeling of EPS+epoxy boards compared to their old PU+polyester ones is due to this light-core / heavy core mechanics rather than the buoyancy or rigidity difference.
