I am buying my husband a SUP for Christmas and wanted to know if anyone has any good recommendations on brands and types of boards that I should look at?

We live on the river so it will be used for flat water not waves. He does allot of Kayaking and is extremely fit, not sure if that makes a difference in the type of board.

Any suggestions would be great!

If he's never done it before I'd recommend something like the Naish Nalu 11'4". Good stable board that cruises well on flat water and can be taken into the surf once he gets better at it.

Keep in mind that SUPing and Kayaking are quite different sports so there will be a learning curve.

The Nalu is a great starter board that most people end up keeping (I did too) because its just such a great all round board. Great for beginners, intermediate and advanced.

Now if he's SUPed before and wants a dedicated flat water board then I'll leave that to the experts on here. But the dedicated flat water boards are probably not the best for beginners until they find their feet.

How tall/heavy is husband?

Which river do you live on and what's your situation with storage? Do you have roof racks to get the board to the water or are you walking distance?

We live in Perth so the Swan river. We wouldn't need to transport it just walk it down to the river.

He has SUP a few times but only ever the ones you hire when we are away on holidays.

This works well to get to river for us. Would be a strain to carry all the way.

I zip tied a cut up pool noodle on for extra protection.

Okay so Swan River can get a bit bumpy so a pure flat water board may not be the best option. If he has no interest in the surf, then it would be a drag to be stuck with a wave board or even an all rounder. I'd suggest a touring board. Something like this...

I agree.. The 12' Glide would be a good choice..

Also a board like my 12'6'' Glide.. like mine..



Also the new 11' touring board [my next board] would be another good option..

I'm sure it's a fine board but it's an all round shape so unless you have a particular need for that shape, i.e. you might want to try surfing or white water, then you are better off with a touring/race shape for river paddling.

worth trying a Coreban Dart...cover all bases...
