IMO I think if you can afford it get a naish, jp, starboard, jimmy lewis, fanatic, coreban etc, whatever you save on purchase you will lose on resale.
However if thats what you want and can afford it will get you by.

Hi Sargeacr

Just a little info on the Ocean Critters brand for you any else anyone interested.

We are a West Australian family run business, our boards are designed and tested here in W.A. We do not buy generic factory shapes supplied by the Chinese factories, we spend hours designing them with a computer program to make sure we know that what we get will work. We "tweak" the boards every order to make improvements.
We are very passionate at what we do. I guess that's the reason we have survived for three years as a smaller player. Its not easy

We have been dealing with Asian factories for over 3 years now and know for a fact that quite a few of the "big" brands have moved operations or parts of production to China.

Most of the gear we produce is entry to intermediate level, we explain this to our customers and have never pushed our boards as super high performance high end boards. Having said that we have had some good feedback from guys that have specifically bought the boards for the surf

In the early days we did have a few construction issues, but have addressed these and upgraded with every order to get the boards to a point we are happy with.
All our boards are now wood sandwich epoxy/fiberglass with bamboo deck.

A lot of positive feedback has been received from our customers. If your on a budget and after a kit to get you out there and do most things then we may be able to help.

As for the re-sale comments. I agree to a point but I think its all pretty relevant.

Buy one of our boards for $900 sell a year later for $500 - $600. Loss of $300 (well you cant classify it as a loss because you've had hours of fun :) )
Buy a big name for $1600 and sell a year later for $1100 - $1200

Give us a call or drop in some day. I could talk about surfboards all day!!

Cheers

Yep cheers for the info Captainkaos sounds good, I must admit I assumed they would be just generic factory shapes and I did see a couple of early ones that had issues.
Good to hear you have been tweaking things, sounds like they have come a long way.
Good luck with it, it's always good to see local guys giving it a go.

It certainly does get confusing with all the "cheap" sups on the market at the moment. I bought a very cheap and not so nasty one to get me back into surfing - and its absolutely fine for the moment. I have no expectations on resale, nor on it being the best I could get....but I am already researching mid to high end boards/brands. Saw the Ocean Critters advertised in the Buy and Sell section. Experience has shown me that there are some cheaper brands in just about any product.. that will be up to the quality and design as the top of the line stuff. But takes a fair bit of weeding through many cheap-arsed rubbish .. I would like to think Ocean Critters might be good value and would love to see some users feedback sometime!

Yeah your right Kuz. There is quite a difference between some of the very low end Chinese boards and the mid level boards. The problem is a lot of sellers are large on line stores or importers of completely different products getting on the sup bandwagon. They use sourcing agents to find any old factory that will make them the boards and the end product is usually very low standard/quality. They don't have any input into the design or construction cause they are in it for a quick buck.

We are only interested in surfboards, SUP boards and surf accessories. We don't do bamboo flooring, we don't do electric bikes and no boats!

If anyone's interested we have a few demos available at our warehouse Alkimos Surf. Its only a couple of minutes from the Marina. Also a few reviews on our facebook page

Cheers
