I am a 48 year old, 6 foot, 185 lb (85 kg) male. I should weigh less, but until they make a zero carb beer that doesn't taste like crap, I do not see that changing. I have been out on a SUP about 20 times. 10 of those just surfing. I still suck.
My first time surfing was on a Naish 10' Mana. Felt a little unstable and was beat after an hour. But I rode a few waves. Was unable to switch foot position without falling. Next 9 times surfing was on a South County 9er. Was able to catch a wave pretty easily and even switch foot positions with out falling. But still can not really turn. It did not wear me out like the Mana. I like the board, but it is pretty heavy. Did I mention I am fairly lazy. Carrying that thing is a PIA.
Not sure what style of surfing I intend to do, since I have very limited experience. But just going straight is somewhat boring. I am a very good skier, and if I can not ski the bumps at full throttle, then why ski. I expect my surfing style to go along the same lines. That is, lots of turning/carving on 2 to 4 foot waves. I learned to ski at an early age, before my realization of mortality imposed its will upon me. Therefore, I do not expect to test myself against the larger waves.
I surf Latigo out of Malibu, Ca. Hope to expand to other areas in Malibu/Ventura area. Surf is 2 to 4 feet and fairly clean.
So, what I am looking for is a board for surfing only that is less than 10 feet long (needs to fit in the back of my Scout), as stable as possible, as lite as possible, and will let me progress from current ability to an intermediate level in the conditions and style I described.
Looking at:
Starboard Hero, Widepoint 9'5", Widepoint 8'10", Fanatic Allwave 9'2" and 8'10", SurfingSport Stoke 9'6", or ?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. Any place to demo these boards in the waves in the So Cal area?
Hi scoutdude,
In addition to the boards you have on your list already, also think of the NSP 9'2" Cocomat and 9'3" Fanatic Prowave. You might also want to have a look at the Surftech Channel Islands Surf Caddie 9'1" or even 9'7"
All good options.

PS. You do know that this is an Australian Forum right? You might try the www.standupzone.com website for US specific details like dealer locations and spots etc.
Thanks for the reply.
I will look into those boards as well. I am aware that this is an Australian Board, but the members here seem to be very familiar with the boards I listed. Thus, the reason I gave an over abundance of detail to my post. I also noticed that some members are from the USA, and thus posted the last bit about local demos.
I had the great pleasure of hanging out with some of your bretheren in my European travels. Hanging out with them at Octoberfest in Munich was an incredible experience. Hope to go to Australia someday.
Cheers,
Dan
