Do the earlier Naish Nalus have a mast screw in the deck, mine has a screw but it looks more like a vent and seems too far back for a mast base.Anyone know?
I have a 2010 Nalu and it doesnt have a mast screw. The screw is definitely a vent screw, came with a big warning sticker on it.
I have heard the bamboo nalus, mine is AST have a mast screw.
Cheers
Yep not too sure on the age of mine,it does have a wood deck, with that sort of black lined tribal graphic. The screw is about 170mm past the handle front edge towards the nose, and of course on the centre line. The screw has an o ring on it which is why I thought vent,if it just goes into a nut on the deck would it need an o ring. But hell what would I know,I want to attach a mast base hence the question.
If the metal screw has a rubber 'o' ring it will be the vent screw for sure.. The mast base hole should just be a threaded hole with nothing screwed into it.
This pic shows the V (vent screw) and the M (mast base screw hole) in the old 11'6" Nalu... I'm pretty sure I've got this right.
The board with the oval grey deck grip has the original mast track.. not just a screw hole.. and the grip is stuck over the vent screw so it was permanently sealed.

Thanks everyone for your input.I am leaning towards vent screw from your replies.Bugger.Next question do any Sups still have a mast screw?,or do I go hunting for a much older Nalu with a track or mast screw to add to the fleet.
Yep DJ it has a wood deck, and from your photo the"vent" screw looks to be in the same position as the indicated mast screw on yours. You won't believe this, but I got the old metal detector out and searched over the deck pad.It beeped away over the "vent" screw(which of course I can see anyway) and was dead silent any further forward ,so fairly confident that there is no deck insert nut under the pad.
Early nalus had a mast track not just the brass insert. This track is plastic so a metal detector won't find it. What size is your board? if you can throw up a pic as there was a few variations.
The deck pad was often not cut out to give access to the track if the original customer wasn't a windsurfer. Is the deck pad cammo?
Just wondering.. Is the hand hole way out of the balance point and very tail heavy?
Post a pic if you can.

Thanks all ,yep DJ I know where you are going with the tail heavy etc.I bit the bullet and took the board down to a specialist windsurfing shop,he took a look and said "vent"screw for sure.He suggested gently probing through the deck pad with a fine needle to see if there is in fact a track under the pad. Thanks everyone for the input I will update should there be any exciting developments(I obviously have too much time on my hands.Weather will improve soon and stop this madness)
Just an update on the elusive mast track or nut.My apologies to WINDSURFnSNOW , I was dead wrong .My initial probing with a fine needle indicate that just behind the vent screw is where the mast track starts(either that or there is large hole in the deck under the pad) .I haven't cut the slot out of the pad yet(it is not the original pad of course),that's next.So thanks to all ,mystery solved.
My 2010 11'6" Nalu AST has both a vent screw and mast screw insert - as shown on DJ's pic. Took me a while to not freak-out when I looked down & noticed the open thread on the mast screw hole! (memories of a couple of times forgetting my w/s board vent screw).
