Hey Everyone,
New to forum and new to sup, just about to invest in my first sup board and hoping to get a bit of advice here first. I'm 30 and I weigh 80kg, I'm looking for a board for 90% flat water paddling, I might occasionally venture out in small surf but mainly flat. There are 2 boards on offer second hand to me, one is the Naish Nalu 11'6, the other is a 10' x 30'' which I think is a bit too surf orientated for what I want? All the reviews of the nalu are very good but a lot of them mention its size/volume and how suited it is to bigger guys, I'm just hoping to get some opinions if this board is suited for me or if its too big? And what issues could I have using a board too big for me? Any advice would be great.
Thanks
Ollies, firstly - welcome to the mad-house!
I have a Nalu 11'6" and at 110kgs - absolutely love it! It's an all-rounder that goes very well in the flatwater & also surfs small waves well. It has a very generous rocker, but you wouldn't know it paddling on a lake or river. As my first sup, I use mine in the river, lake and paddling around our local harbour just enjoying the scenery and when the surf is small, it's my go-to board. It also goes pretty well on downwinders, picking up runners easily.
I'm sure there are other brand comparisons but if you can pick up a Nalu at a good price then go for it!
The Nalu 11-6 is a great do-it all board, and an ideal first SUP. It's the sort of board that even experienced SUPers might keep in their quiver for the sheer fun-factor, or for lending out to family and friends. In time you may decide that you want to buy a board that is more specialised to exactly what you want to do (e.g. a race-board type). But if you can get the Naish at a good price secondhand, I'd say buy it without hesitation. Because it is such an appealing design to a lot of people, if you do want to sell it on later, you will probably lose hardly anything on it (as long as you look after it).
If you want to do mostly flat water paddling don't bother with a 10x30 surf-oriented SUP. Get something longer, even if it isn't the Naish. Even 10-6 makes a difference.
Sweet, that's what I wanted to hear
I was a bit concerned that it could be too big but I guess it will give me a soft start anyway, thanks a lot for the replies.
I agree with all the above.my first board and a top board good to take the kids on with you to go fish spotting and surfing small waves as well.
Definitely a keeper for me.
Grab it if you can.
