Finally got my Paddleboard quiver together for my local surf breaks. Some of you might like to look at the comparisons including Rocker profiles which aren't always so easy to describe.
The average swell down my way is about 1.5 metres or 3 to 4 foot. On bigger days it can average 2 to 3 metres or 6 to 8ft.
My boards are used on beach & point breaks plus an entrance break too, which can change a fair bit depending on tide & water run out.
So that's why I have 3 boards to cover most of my needs. All boards have manageable stand still balance.
For my weight at 76kg, I have been an average of 80kgs to 85kgs too.
My main board that can cover most situations is my 8ft 3" 29inch wide Sunova Soul at 110litres. It is my go to board when the waves are big. Or fairly fat. Or just plain nice. Its nose & tail rocker is smooth & progressive. It surfs fast, smooth, in control & so easy to turn. It's such a pleasure to surf. Stand still balance is good.
My next board is the JP Widebody 8ft 2" 32 inch wide, 124litres. I use it in choppy conditions with fairly fat waves is ideal. Or those onshore winds that mush up the surf. Not as fast or smooth as the Soul. But paddles well with some glide to get on the waves early like the Soul. Its nose & tail rocker is fairly shallow & I have nose dived it a few times. Mainly because I dont get onto the tail pad with my back foot when going down the wave face. Lol!!It still surfs well on anything up to overhead though. But not as controllable as the Soul. Stand still balance is better than the Soul in choppy conditions.
My last board is the 7ft Coreban Hyper, 29.5 inch wide, 115litres. I use it for those sucky waves or late take offs.
It has much less glide due to its excessive nose rocker which pushes water at slower speeds and it yaws when paddleing, that is the nose will move left & right. Less when standing further towards the nose. Which is OK for a short board as it takes no effort to get near or on the back pad as you take the drop down the wave face.
The Hyper needs speed to perform at its best & will bog down when the wave gets fatter so don't expect to make it through a section to the next break unless you are going fast! The Soul & JP can do this easily. Stand still balance is good but less than both the Soul & JP. The Hyper needs the best timing accuracy when catching waves. But so much fun getting through steep critical sections! The Hyper compliments my quiver by giving me balance, timing, accuracy & late take off practice. So getting back on the Soul & JP is more of a breeze. Well sometimes. Lol!!!
