Hi, Would appreciated some advise I have just sold my surf ski planning to take up Stand up paddle boarding, had a go while on holidays and loved it!! I am looking for a board that will be great for me but the kids and husband can also use it, husband surfs and weighs about 85kg. Want to use it mainly for flat water in the bay but we holiday at Sandy point in Vic so will use it in small surf and on the inlet down there. I have had a look at a used Cabrinha 9'8 board which is retails $1800 can get it for $1000 and its in great condition. Would appreciated some advise should I look at something else? Thanks
The 9.8 Cabrinha is a fantastic board. My mate and I have been paddling one quite a bit lately in both flatwater and the surf and its great fun in both. I am 70kg and my mate about 90kg and it seems to be just as suitable for both weights. He has actually ordered one himself and will be taking delivery in the next week or so. The board is super stable, even in the choppiest conditions and it doesn't feel at all bargey or slow like so many boards over 30inches wide - really can't rate the board highly enough.
Hi midas, i have the 9.8 cabrihna hybrid in my quiver. Its a beautiful looking board and is pretty stable. If it is the latest model it has a volume of 152 litres. Im 105/6 kg and its plenty stable for my weight. The cabrihna has a stepped deck whick means that the rails arent overly chunky like most boards of this volume. It is geared more towards surfing than paddling, although it paddles ok. It does not have the rounded nose or nose volume in the front so its probably a little less forgiving than a mana or an allwave. At 105/6 kg im probably at its capacity. If i move too far forward on it ill bury the rails. When i get it right though its a beautiful board to surf. Its just a little bit more difficult to master than some other entry leve boards. I can hazard a safe guess that you probably weigh a whole lot less than me. Up to 90 kg and the cabrihna will be fantastic, its fast turns well, but not as loose as my new allwave 9.6 and for a lighter rider would surf well from 2 foot to well overhead. Note though that it is a very heavy board. Mine is at least,a couple of kilos heavier than my naish mana 10. The grip on the cabrihna is also pretty hard on your feet. In summary if your under 85-90 kg, the cabrihna will be really good. A mana or allwave will be a little easier to learn on but the cabrihna surfs well paddles ok and looks fantastic.
Good luck.
yes it's a steep learning curve, but you won't regret it
I did the same thing , my only regret now was not going shorter
hind sight's a bitch aye !!!
