I'm looking at getting a SUP board, but due to space issues I'm considering an inflatable. I'm looking at a 10'6" Fanatic Fly Air at the moment. Any thoughts/suggestions?

I have the red air 12'6" race and it's awesome!! It can be inflated up to 40psi but even running at 12psi it's still rock hard. It's great for dw and catching runners and very very stable. It's almost the same stiffness as a regular solid sup. I weigh 100kg and I rate it very highly. There are lots of isups available ATM, you get what you pay for so don't be cheap. The money you spend are for the features you want in an isup. Enjoy

40 psi sounds alot FB?

Lozz, I bought the 10 foot Fly (Premium) a few months ago, as a family board / beginners board for my wife. I am really happy with it so far, it is super stable (and it should be at 33" wide) and paddles quite well. Build quality seems good also.
I choose the premium over the standard model due to the better construction and consequently the opportunity to increase inflation pressure, I think it is recommended up to 16psi for the standard model and 22 psi for the premium model.
The inflatable definitely has a different feel compared to a hard board, it feels like it sticks to the water more, but keeping things in perspective it is something you can easily roll up into a (big) backpack.
The 10 foot is a pretty big, stable board, I can paddle it with both kids on there also without a problem, my only suggestion would be to make sure the 10'6 isn't going to be too big for what you want it for.
Do you have any previous SUP experience?

I can recommend the ULI brand to you.
We have had two 12'6" for three years now they inflate to 18 psi and at that level are very much like a hard board .
These boards have traveled overseas with us and currently we are enjoying paddling them in Tassie.
These 12'6" boards paddle just as fast as out 12'6" hard board but are a little more corky in the chop but you soon get used to that.
Backup and service is excelant and as you are in Vic do yourself a favour and try a ULI before you purchase

Hi Lozz, all depending on your usage. TheFanatic Fly 10.6 is a good allrounder but if you like to surf a lot it ,might be too big , then rather go for 10.0 or even
9.0. Qualitywise I would go for the Premium. Anyway with the big brands as Naish,Starboard,JP and Fanatic and Red Paddle you dont make a mistake.
Main difference between the name brands and others is manufacturing quality and weight. For instance my Starboard Touring 12.6 is much lighter than my
RRD 9.8. That makes a huge difference if you carry it with the backpack. Also if you take it on an airplane ,with the 20 kg limit you are fine if the whole backpack including
paddle is only about 11 kg and you pack the rest of your stuff around it.
No idea about the ULI as they dont sell in Germany.
AsFacebook said, i cant find an advantage to inflate higher than 16 psi as they are rock hard already and pumping up to higher pressure is really hard work.

Check the red air web site. Do some research, get an adaptor and use a compressor. 40psi is high,you don't need to run it that high but they are made very well and can handle such high pressures.

I had a pretty good look on their website, the highest they mention is 29psi, and they even suggest that anything over that won't result in any increased board stiffness.
Have you actually inflated yours to 40, or just confident that it can be done? Surely at 40psi longevity would be compromised.

Technically you could inflate the board to 40psi. We wouldn't advise it. While stiffness massively increases between 15-25psi you don't gain much benefit above 28psi.

That would be the only way your Fanatic could beat my ULI , if you pumped it up to 40 psi the bum would blow out giving you jet propulsion :)

Ha, that's a classic mate, knowing my luck I would be going around in circles anyway! That's assuming it survives the tyre pump at Mario's servo of course!
At 33 wide it isn't the fastest thing in the ocean, less so when you have one of the kids getting towed holding on to the leash 'snorkelling' and the other insistent in trying to tip me off. Good times.
Will be keen to catch up when you are back for sure.

Just to show more advantages of Isups : No roof rack needed, easy to park at the filling station.

I do not like the inflatable SUP, not cheap, not solid.
I recently bought a BLACKHAWK 10'6 All round, great value.

Just bought a Red Paddle Co 10'6 today. Based on such positive research (on the company and its product)..........

Primarily to take both my kids simultaneously - should be a blast, get it either end of this week or early next week. Will post a review/thoughts/update once I get it water borne.
