Hi, I'm new to Stand Up paddle boarding and am excited as I have just ordered a Naish Nalu 10.65. I have seen the carry slings on the internet and wondered if they are a good product. Also are they a sturdy and safe way of storing my board on the wall?? Some suggestions would be most appreciated.![]()
Hey Sal, welcome to the 'breeze.
A new Nalu will have Naish's excellent carry handle built in so you might not need a sling, unless you plan on walking more than a couple of hundred yards with your board. If you decide you really need/want a sling, NPSURF make a decent one and there are a couple of OK types pop up on ebay.
If you're planning on walking several blocks or more with it, have a look at SUP Mule or SUPwheels.
Also are they a sturdy and safe way of storing my board on the wall?? Some suggestions would be most appreciated.![]()
IMO.. Yes.. You can even use a couple of tie down straps and a shoulder strap from an old bag.

Thanks guys, I live by the beach at Wynyard but have a shack at Boat harbour so want to be able to transport my board on my car. Also we have some great rivers to discover on the nw coast of Tas. Your replies have given me something to think about . The other question that springs to mind is... "" What would be the best straps to use on Roof racks??? ..."" I don't want to damage the rails of my new SUP board.
The problem with the commercial slings is they are too big and bulky. You have to wear a bum bag to carry it when you go paddling, or stash it in the bushes.
You can make a perfectly good sling from a bit of 2" webbing. The finished product is compact enough to put in the pocket of your boardies. Sew (or tie) a couple of small loops in each end. Pull the loops back over the webbing to make bigger loops, slip the big loops over your board and away you go. Maybe practice with a couple of tied loops until you get the length right.
The best tie downs if you are going to leave your board unattended on the roof of your car are the lockable ones. http://www.stickprotection.com/
The best non-lockable tie downs are made by Sea to Summit. You buy them from Rays Outdoors for about $25-30 a pair. They are rated at 25kg each and certified to Australian Standards. The metal buckles have neoprene covers so they don't chip your paint.
The tie downs will not damage the rails of your board, but you might if you over tighten them. Don't do that. ![]()
I have a Naish carry sling - works very well with plastic clips. I have a fair wee walk to get in so use them when the tide is out...or if it is windy......paddle back in when the tide is in. It works great and rolls up nicely to fit is a bum bag - not bulky at all.
I'd never bother with the big fancy gadgets that encase your SUP.....what you going to do with that when you get in? All you need is is basic straps and buckle...just like David John says.
