Bubbles in the surface of my Naish SUP

Hi,

I have had a Naish 8.5 Hokua GT for about 2 years. Last year I noticed when I ran my hand over the top surface of the board (between the pad and tip) the surface felt gritty. This year I have noticed that these grit bits have turned into small bubbles. At least two of these bubbles have burst. One of them has left a 2 - 3 cm hole in the top surface layer of the resin.

I am wondering if anyone knows why this has happened so I can avoid it getting worse?

Also wondering if I should repair the holes in the top layer of resin?

Thanks in advanced.

Hi 8Paws,

Did you register your product with Naish, you can always send them an email and seek advice on this....do you leave the board in the sun..?

Photos, If it is a manufacture fault, head back to the shop where you purchased it. If you are out of luck there and near Braeside, head to Oke industries.

Chokko there and the crew are wizards at SUP repairs ( speaking from experience!)

Have you been storing it wet in a board bag?

If you put a wet board in a bag and leave it in the hot sun it will sweat and may cause bubbles in the paint. Common sense really.

Sorry if it was common sense no one would have board bags.

If I need to explain further then what can I say.

Thanks all,

Yes it is left wet in the bag. No to being left in its bag in the sun other than going from A to B and the occasional longer periods on roof racks. It is left in a garage that can get hot during summer. Doesn't get left in direct sun light without the bag.

Nevertheless, I think heat is the cause of the problem after doing some internet research. I am surprised the board has suffered so quickly...naive of me I guess.

Osmosis. First came across it years ago with my Fireball (fibreglass). Same thing happens with my McT sups. Leave the board out of the bag and the bubbles eventually disappear.

You can use board bags, just never close the zip fully. Leave the zip 1' to 2' open for the board to dry. Basically I zip just around the tail and stop before the front fins.
A wet board in a closed bag will:
- risk having paint bubbles by osmosis (doesnt happen to all boards)
- have the water in vapor form go through the goretex vents and nest deep in the blank by capillarity, as the vent is always "breathing" due to temperature changes. The board lady tells of a board that had gained 1lbd weight this way.

But dont just listen to me. You MUST READ the expert on these domains: boardlady.com/maintenance.htm

I guess the sane thing to do would be to cut a hole in the bag where the goretex vent is.

Well there you go, you learn something new every month or so. I noticed a few little bubbles on my board not that long ago, had never had it happen before.
Thanks for that Colas

Thanks for this tip. I have followed these instructions and indeed the bubbles are going. :-)
