Hi guys, wanting to buy my first SUP..... I'm 6'2" and 105kg with no surfing background. I'm looking for a board to paddle mainly for fitness on flat water, but would love to be able to learn to catch some small waves in the future. Ideally I'm ping for a board I can take my young daughter exploring on, and if it's not to much to ask of one board be suitable for my 5'2" wife to paddle on flat water only!

Any suggestions would be most welcome... The depth of knowledge and experience, coupled with the friendliness makes this a place I can see myself hanging out more and more.

Cheers

Welcome to the Breeze..

The 10'10" is the better board for both you and your wife..

But if you want to paddle with your daughter on board maybe the 11'6'' is the best choice (depending on how big she is)

Maybe you need to buy both..

I'd think long term - once you've had a go at surfing you'll all want your own board Think DJ is right on with the 10 10.......nice and wide so you can't go wrong to start off with.

I might disagree with the 2 previous guys (although very scared/brave to go against DJ's advice). At 6'2" & 110kegs, my first sup was a 11'6" Nalu and I still have it. I had no surfing background either - with exception of some windsurfing, albeit flatwater mainly.

The 11'6" is a great flatwater cruiser for touring on, fitness paddling and surfing in small beachies & breaks. I've had my each of my 3 kids on it with me, my dog, and the wife paddles it also. In saying that, I haven't ridden the 10'10", and although I doubt that it could glide as well, it could be good also.

Demo both & make the decision before buying.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the advice. Should I also consider the Fanatic Fly in either 11 or 11 6? I had a guy at Strapper try to sell me on the NSP Coco mat 10 2, I would have thought this a bit small for my first board?

I've had at least three 11'6'' Nalu's and I once said if I only had one board that would be it.. It was a special board.

The new 10'10'' Nalu is even more special.. but for paddling with kids the bigger 11'6'' is the better board.

A bit too small to paddle with a kid imo.

How would the Naish 10' 10" compare to the Fanatic All around 11' I see that the Fanatic has a bit more width than the Naish 11'6"... Would it be a bit of both worlds?? And thanks for your thoughts so far... It seems you've really got to nail down exactly what you want the board to do!

Went the 11'6 on DJ's and others recommendation......it's a barge ........and we love it

Two kids 9 and 7 plus myself can jump on and explore - at 250 litres it's got a heap of float

Surfing is not my strong point nor the boards....

It is BIG and only just fits in our toy trailer but it goes everywhere - if it's not windy we paddle

Yes ,you have seen the light and seen through the smoke and mirrors ,width is everything for newbies, stability is everything ,try the Fanatic Fly.

I'll throw in my 2 cents worth. Go the Naish 11'4 Nalu. It will paddle (maybe not as well as the 11'6 because more surf rocker), be good to tandem on and surf. It was my first SUP but been a surfer all my life. 30" is wide enough. I still have it and use it on small to nothing days or paddling between the two points on our beach. Love it even though these days surf 8'6 / 8'7 as favourites.

What would be thoughts / recommendation on a 10'10' or the 10'6' for an intermediate ability, 95kegs, small to medium wave ability?

Thoughts?

I'm 95kgs.. I find the 10'6'' Nalu pretty stable.. It's an excellent small to medium wave board.
