Hi everyone,

Decided to make another post, this time to check what other SUP'ers who are in the same bracket of Height and Weight are riding. In my last post, I had a really good post from NeilInOz recommending the Starboard Avanti as it works for him and he is of a similar Ht/Wt ratio. I am just getting into the sport and deciding what to buy.

I would love to hear from others of a similar build as to what they ride.

Got to be an Allwave ideal for you...surf great and stable as you come.......but that is if you are surfing and not flat water paddling?

Hi Slab,

What size allwave?

I am looking for a board that is good for flat water but that I can take in small to medium size waves as well.

I'm about 6'2 & 10 kegs heavier than you...I ride:

Starboard Atlas 12' x 33 - small to med waves, just paddlin' around with kids & newbies, rough water training
Fanatic Allwave 9'10 x 33 - surf

Atlas is brilliant for cruising and your first small-med waves. It was my first board and it's a keeper. It's more a point 'n shoot surfer though, doesn't turn too well. Good glide, cruises great with me and a kid on board, I even even race it in social class occasionally. Love the Allwave, it'll do what you want, with a change of fin it cruises OK and is a hoot in med-shoulder surf. If you're just starting out or more cruising for the time being then the 9'10 x 33 is the better choice of Allwave, if you're more athletic and reckon you'll take to the surf then you're maybe on the margin for a 9'6". "Shiresup" on here rates his 10'4 x 34 JP. You could also look at 10' Naish Mana or 10' x 34 Coreban EZ but IMO the Allwave is a superior all-rounder, have only tried the JP in surf so can't comment on its cruising ability. For you I reckon the Avanti might be overkill, depends a bit on how much flat water vs surf you intend doing and whether you want to be toting kids.

As always, Demo, demo, demo.

hi mate
i am the same size as you, i started off on an 11'6 generic board, great for learning and for flatwater, another big guy at my local surfs an avanti, the thing looks huge on the land but when you get it in the water the thing goes unreal, i cant comment on the allwaves as i haven't paddled one but all of these people cant be wrong (maybe), the best way is to go into your local store and have a chat and demo some boards if this is an option, what ever you do just have fun

Pluss one for the avanti. I was 110 kg when I started and have not looked back. I am only new to surfing but the board gets onto the waves well and can turn ok when you learn some footwork. I also have a 14 foot x 30" fanatic falcon that I use when there is no surf (which is most of the time up here). I have been caught out a couple of times and used the falcon in small waves, challenging but heaps of fun.

Hi I'm the same size as well with a hip replacement my first board was an Avanti wanted overkill because my balance sucked after the op for it's size great in the surf and flat water . Sold it bought an atlas thinking it would be better on flat water and still surf ok . It flat waters better but sucks in the surf, should of kept the Avanti better all rounder than the atlas. Still have the Avanti and bought a whopper for surf I now use the whopper most of the time for a big guy it rips in the surf and still flat waters ok. Kept the atlas to teach friends. My wife and have an element and a 9'8'' JP fusion I can ride both but its a effort. In hindsight I wish I bought the whopper first up it's carbon and when it wear's out I will buy another hope this helps

Hey Rob, hope you have fun with the board, do a bit of a Google search on the Paddlers. There are some very interesting vids of a couple of Massive Hawaiian dudes surfing them. Ill see if I can find them and post the links. Remember when your doing the flatwater practice paddling, chuck in some surf stance and pivo

Close to your specs - still hop on my 11'4" Naish Nalu on occasion for flat & having a ball in small waves (also rig a sail on it on occasion), but for waves I got a custom Stonker (Torquay Vic) made for me - 9'8" x 29&1/2". Looking at slightly smaller for the next wave board - first need to hit the salad & water...not the bbq & beer-fridge!

Thanks for all the advice everyone! I really appreciate everyones thoughts and experience. I think the plan for now is to buy Leroys board and if that is still to wobbly or me, source an Avanti. My wife is keen to get on the PSH already, so either way it will have a good home.

Hey everyone, this was a great example of crowdsourcing advice. Good researching by Aramathorn, great input by everyone.

HumanCartoon: I think you have pretty much identical leverage on a board as Aramathorn and me - it was interesting that you think that the Avanti might be too big for him. For what it's worth (and I'm a real mug) the Avanti has never felt an inch too big, and I still manage to fall off regularly. But less as time goes on!
