Hi all. First post here so be gentle.
I've windsurfed since the mid 90s and briefly kite surfed in the early stages of kite development 2002-2007 so I am no newcomer to board sports but thought some advice from the pros is never a bad thing.
Now I've got old and fat I need a new sport to keep me occupied.
I'm looking at the JP wide body 10'2x35" at 228litres.
I'm on a big health kick and have lost 18 kilos in 4 months and planning on hitting 100kg by the end of summer. I'm currently 115kg and 6'1".
What are people's thoughts on big volume boards for surfing and a bit of flat water.
Any help much appreciated.
Hope to be SUPing with you all very soon.
Hi Mr Roo
Welcome to the dark side.
Mate of mine who is a very good surfer, but a large gent like yourself, rides the Starboard 10' whopper when the surf is small and the 9' whopper when there is some size. Another mate also has the 10 footer and is a beginner and has been catching waves as well. He is also your build.
The JP wide body would be similar so I would guess that it would suit you.
Good luck with it all and ENJOY!!!!![]()
Reckon you would have more fun and longevity/progression on a Fanatic Allwave 9ft 10 x 33......190 litres. Might be able to pick up one second hand too.
35 inches wide is WIDE!!!
I'm inclined to agree with Slab...I'm taller and heavier than you, with crap balance and no surfing in my background and I get on fine with my 9'10 Allwave in all but the crappiest conditions. I've never needed wider than 33". I haven't been on the JP but 228 litres and 35" is a helluva lot of board even for a bloke your size...unless you're severely balance-challenged I suspect you'd outgrow it fairly quickly. Maybe user ShireSup could chime in here, I understand he's very happy with his JP but I don't think it's as big as the 35".
