It's amazing to see how fast this sport has progressed with stock boards coming out sub 7-0 , Sunova is also there as well with sub 7's & 6's but they are constantly evolving , what this space they have some great new ones coming out.

Jimmy Lewis has the ALL new 6'5" & 6'11" we've been riding & the paddle & glide are equally as good as my previous 7'3 but the flight time is much better & especially the pump back out to my 2nd wave... Also down winding is noticeably easier but it's all relative to someone's weight & ability...

How do you paddle a sub-7' board back out into the line-up (assuming you can't roo-hop all the way back out)?

And how do you paddle a sub-7' board on to a wave if it is not steep - or are you guys that good at paddling and pumping?

The foil adds a ton of extra stability and the foil board shapes are wider nose and tail so they are pretty stable. Yes the paddle back out can be a slug with a short board and a foil hanging under it. But its a sweet ride!

In my situation my normal sup is 8'2 x 28 at 105 litres but but go to foil sup in the surf is 6'6" x 28.5 at 115 litres but when its clean i ride a 6'0" x 27.5 at 98 litrs.

I am 47yrs and 92kg. (old and bit fat!)

Turning into a great thread how are all the new boards.

Yeah what Scotty said the foil is your centre board so all it has to do is float you. Believe it or not you get more waves on a shorter board , fits in the swell better picking up the tail and easier to give it a pump squirt to get on.

I've got the JP Pro 7' which is a great ride for me, this board has all the features I wanted except it's a track mount only.

Someone say foil boards?? Sorry I had a few out on demo and sold out of others so not all are in the pic.

Not a problem. With the foil on a 6' 6" SUP I am not catching waves as if I was on a 12' SUP on a non-breaking wave.

Spot on. Intuitively what allot of folk have been doing on shorter standard SUPs I guess.
I've been surprised how much more stable my 7'8" Hokua is with a foil. Slower to get going, but once up to paddle speed fine with less yaw.

Lots of useful info there, thanks. Be very interested to hear how these boards compare with each other and slightly longer boards.

What does that mean? Isn't that what you want to do with a foil? Catch small non-breaking waves?

You have to recalibrate the waves you go looking for.

Sure you can surf a non breaking wave, but you need to find some waves mixed with those swells, that crumble at the top. Any little bit of whitewater is all the kick in the rear you need to get airborne. Most of us can't pump and paddle a board airborne without some help.

Some of these short foil boards paddle pretty quick. Others are hard work. Demo. It's early days design wise.

Thanks for all the comments/answers to my question. In part I was thinking yaw (I am OK on my right, still poor on my left no matter what I try...), float (although the volume is up on most of those boards), and stability (although the foil adds a lot), but it is still the question of speed - paddling a slug that fast. But if the wave is lipping then I guess that provides the push you need. I gotta get back and try again...

Yes, that's why an onshore wind is so helpful for foiling.

But all these boards are Supfoil only boards, except the Starboard 4in1?
So specialized that they don't work for classic supsurfing.
Building up quivers, meaning a higher number of boards.
Or will they replace the classic Surfsup (for some)?

I still like the idea of having one board for everything and equip it with the tools i need for having the most fun on the water, be it surf fins, a supfoil or a windfoil/straps/rig. But maybe that's a question of distance to sea, i have to drive around a lot of stuff in my car and it makes a difference if i carry 1 WindFoilSup Crossover or 3 Windfoil, Supfoil, Supsurf boards arround.

The 6'4 I'm foiling yaws less than my 7'8 performance SUP. It's wild times and fun to be a shaper right now.

I suggest everyone become Piros best friend and demo his boards

Yaw on the shorter Foil SUP's has a lot to do with placement of the mast - mast back = less yaw, mast forward lots of yaw, too far forward un-paddleable.. Mast forward is easier to get up as your weight in paddling position is centered over wing. Starboard and JL look like they are designed for Go-foil fuselages where front wing sits well in front of mast, most others have their front wing in line with mast to get more stiffness.

Take care that your board's box options matches your wing......

I meant to say: YES!!!!! When you get good you can catch small unbreaking waves on a 6' 6" Foil Board as well as you can catch small unbreaking waves on a 12' Long SUP.

This is one of the new Sunovas I was talking about , beautiful board. 6-10 x 25 - 90 litres amazing paddle speed and feels great on the foil. This was still a proto the new ones have tracks.

whats your height and weight - if you dont mind me asking :)

183cm 83-85 kegs . This is my last session on that Sunova I paddled a very long way on it in average conditions.
