Popped down to the shops to buy a new pair of Dunlop volleys which is my preferred stuff to have on my feet when sailing but couldn't find any so bought a pair of these at Target:

I must say for $59 I'm impressed...

Unless it's cold I don't wear footware at all when I'm aboard. Once you know where NOT to put your feet when moving around the deck it is so much easier with bare feet. As a bonus you don't have to bother taking anything off your feet before you go into the water or the dinghy. You feet toughen up in a very short time and you don't really notice the difference.
As for when it gets a bit cooler, I just head north till next summer.

Hi all

I was looking for something grippy to wear on the boat I race on and posted a thread on here asking about Burke sailing shoes

The feedback was a bit negative with a lot of people saying they stink after a while but I was wandering round a shop and found a dusty set on a shelf without a price on them and I ended up getting them for $10

I wear them with thin socks (in Tassie so it does not get to hot) and the haven't started to smell as yet and I am pretty happy with how they grip on sloping decks so for $10 I think they are ok

Regards Don

I wear Dunlop volleys myself. Did a delivery to Sydney earlier this year and was invited to sail on a pretty state of the art 40 foot sports boat owned by a couple of Sydney surgeons in their mid 80s. "ah I see you're a Dunlop Volley man" said the skipper pointing at his own feet as he invited me to go main sheet and guest tactician. As the introductions were made I could see his name memory technique working out how to remember Frant which is pronounced as front. Halfway through the race he chimed in with "how are we looking on this tack DOOR? " I've been known as door to the delivery crew since that day.

Beg to differ. You have to have shoe management down pat. Two pairs one sun bleaching to kill bacteria and one pair in use.
Same with bikini management. None permitted to be worn so lack of bikini clad is a better option!!!!!

I have a pair of Volleys as well that I sometimes wear on mine but a lot of the time I just keep my Crocs on

One of the reasons for this is that when I walk across the road from our house to the dinghy shed to go out to the boat the razor cut soles on the Volleys pick up mud and stones where as the soles on the Crocs don't and if they are dirty I can dip the soles in the water as I am getting on the boat to wash the dirt off

The Crocs are grippy enough on the deck ubless the soles are worn out in which case they are a bit slippery

Regards Don

Hey Frant, nice ankles! Do the oldies sail the sports boat mate or is it raced etc on their behalf?

They race the boat. Have done a ****load of hobarts together and is like sailing with the odd couple. Really amusing and good fun.

In the interests of consumer advice we recommend that you go and test a small area of your deck by scuffing your new volley's across it and then report back here with your findings.

Rivers Croc look alikes on special at the moment at $3 a pair. Just picked up a couple of pairs in Adelaide. Great stuff but throw them out when the treads gone, they can be lethal on slimey boat ramps etc. No tread crocs seem to be OK on my deck though.

Croc actually do a croc with razor cut soles but they would pick up stones and dirt on the way to the boat like volleys do

Hi loosechange tried out the dunlop volleys (the ones with the blue soles) on the weekend scuffed and kicked everything in sight but did not leave any marks.you beauty.$39.00 bucks at payless shoes. My last pair of yacht boots were the woolies sandshoes they were alright but only lasted for a very short time the tread wore off quickly and they were a death trap on a wet deck.I have tried to attach photos from the desk top but I lose everything before I can send it.If someone in lala land can help a computer illiterate I will be able to send pics. Catch you later

And there you have it people, real world testing and the knowledge that you can boldly go where no blue soled Volley has gone before and not mark your deck.

Well done that man. Bravo Zulu.

wash smelly volleys in canesten (?) i was told. I was assured it works, but havent tried it myself.

edit, i have just had a quick look at prices online, and it may be better to just buy a new pair. There is a topical solution for around $9. Not sure if you would add this to a bucket of water or how many times you could use it.....not sure about the cream

cheers

Bought a pair of these, they are great in the dry but terrible in the wet.
Are all boat shoes bad in the wet?

PS: noticed they are called beach shoes, so maybe not a boat shoe
