i think sometimes the older style yachts just are not as popular as some of the more upto date designs .....hence the prices ..some are still great sea going yachts though !!

but in general due to the lack of and high cost of berths ...........THEY ARE ALL CHEAP !!! hahahahah

The electric motor would be great if there was some way of charging the batteries. Maybe I am missing something but I didn't see any mention of solar panels or generators, does it need to be moored at a marina to recharge? That would really limit cruising, or really force a reliance on sailing.

That is hell of a good looking yacht SandS. I love that pilot house. You will stay dry in there in any weather short of a stern pooping in the southern ocean.
The 420 is a credit to it's master if the pics are true but that yacht is a round the worlder.
At $185k, not a Iot for a lotta yacht.
Is that what you really want to do or should we rename the thread "Boat Porn".

Have a look at this beautie, already up here where the balmy breezes are, as are some pretty big hail stones around the Wide Bay and Wander's Way this week. I am sure his insurance companies will be coughing well. I can't wait to see his new trucks.

You're right on the money there Wander66.

I spoke to the broker who told me, as it stands, the boat can only really be used as a day-sailer, limited to recharging batteries at the dock.

From what the broker said, I don't think the vendor is any kind of Pardey-type sailing purist, rather just a little misguided and didn't think the whole electric thing through.

Pity as she really is quite stunning. There's something very special about Scandinavian boats

One of the yachts on the cruising channels on you tube has an electric motor. They are always having dramas when motoring if it's not sunny.

Your offer might be accepted. The options are to somehow fit a generator, or re-engine. Fitting a generator on a 31ft boat is too complicated, so it is a re-engine. Probable cost +$20k plus hassle.

There is a lot of misunderstanding out in the media and the population, about what battery power can do. Poor understanding of science, and the concept of energy density of power sources. Batteries are good for low loads, or short bursts of power, but hopeless for continuos high power demand.

Apparently that Elco electric motor can be rigged as a hybrid with a diesel genny, see manufacturers link below. But you need a fixed generator; looks like a 5kVa unit like the Fischer Panda would do the job for $12k, and it only weighs 75kg see other link. Would be an interesting project (with someone else's money).

So you end up with a diesel engine again. Most generators are air cooled, so you will need ventilation fans and ducting. Can't see the point. Yes you might save a little fuel if some of the time you can run on solar, but it is a lot of hassle and more chance of equipment failure.
Large ships have these systems, but typically they have twin screws and a large electrical power demand for things like refregeration, winches etc. They also run their gensets 24/7.

I agree it's more trouble than its worth but I wasn't suggesting the type of genny you you use to run a welding plant out of the back of a truck, the Fischer Panda is a silenced marine generator that's more at a home in superyacht than a landcruiser ute.
