Have no photos but this is now flat and has many layers of Quad matt and epoxy for added strength.
What I need to do next it make a raised section for the mast step to replace the pastibond that was doing the same thing.
I have some fiberglass sheet cut out collected from a speed boat factory there approximately 6 mm thick. I used some of it before making my instrument pod below
I have some flat pieces of this sheet
My intention is to rough all surfaces and epoxy three pieces together to mimic the original plastibond area .
question Good or bad idea ?






also I am thinking of fitted a Garhauer mast step plate

Like the idea of the SS plate. I would be inclined to sandwich it in between the fibreglass sheets and keep it separated from the alloy. Bond it in with epoxy.

Yes I see your point now Ill epoxy some fiber glass sheet on the deck as to raise it to stop any water leak problems and then add the stainless and then add another fiber glass sheet to insulate the aluminum mast step .
Nice one Ramona that was also a problem I wanted to fix also

Is there any reason why it has to have the extra thickness under the mast step

I think on mine it has a stainless mast step under the mast mounted directly on to the cabin top

If you look at the bottom of this photo of mine you can see the mast position of yours on my foredeck where there is a bare section in the middle of the anti slip

I have been very temped to move mine mast into yore position Donk




Removed the stay sail track today I'm fitting a furler

The trouble with that is you would end up with a compression post in the middle of the cabin and that is a bit of a nuisance some times

The other problem would be is that all of your chain plates would be in the wrong position and would have to be moved

Personally i would rather the mast in the position it is on yours

I thought of those and your right Donk Ill leave her as she is . Ive done enough already

HG, your current mast position is correct for a ketch rig isn't it??

If you are not going to re step the mizzen mast I think you will have to move the mast aft to balance her up. If you leave it where it is but don't have a mizzen mast and sail I think she will be a dog to sail.

Going to sloop rig by moving the mast back means you will have a head sail powered yacht with a higher aspect ratioed main sail. You would probably need a taller mast as well. The result would be well worth it but it is a hell of a big and expensive job.

With a ketch rig I believe those boats sail very well in strong winds with just head sail and mizzen.

Pros and cons with both ketch and sloop rig for these boats but they are known to be good yachts with either configuration.

I have always been a sloop sailor and if budget allows it that is the way I would go.

PS:- I reckon you should put that head sail traveller back on.

yes . On Donks sail master there is no Bowsprit if you took this into consideration the only two differences are my mast is forward and I have a full cruising keel
where as Donks Sailmaster has a 3/4 keel

Sorry about being so slow HG (I have still got a 2 inch section of my tiller I have been intending to varnish for the past 2 years) but things happen a bit slower in Tassie than they do in Australia

If the weather is kind this afternoon ( 30 knots forcast) I will go out to her and run a tape over the mast, boom and fore triangle

Donk Hide her Biro so she cant make you a list OK its a windy day here to but Ill have me head down and bum up inside cleaning the mess Ive made.
My skippers found a Biro so I have to help her later dam it was going to throw her list into the bin but she keeps it hiden form me till she wants some thing done
