You mean the white blocks of solid fuel, what we used to cook on those small foldable camping stoves?

I know the small stoves as "hexi" stoves because that particular solid fuel is hexamine, which you can probably only buy at camping and disposals stores these days. Army cadets probably still get issued with them. I think the hexamine lasts long enough to actually cook (re-heat a vietnam era ration pack) on. Wouldn't imagine they're cost efficient as a bbq starter, but never tried it.
By "starter fuel" for a bbq, I mean the small blocks that come in a pack of 24 like:

They might have hexamine in them, but they burn so quickly I doubt it is a major component.
Before I bought the starter chimney, I'd have to have two goes at putting starters in my briquette tower (delicate operation when smouldering)
