Anyone got the run down on decent quality fenders , heaps on ebay , are they any better at marine shops like whitworths.

I have been using the flat type fender for the past 20 years or so on past and present fleet of yachts. I will never go back to the round style.
Goods
they store well.
dont mark the hull.
Can sit on them.
dont deflate.
they don't compress as much.

bads
they blow around abit when it's windy.
they don't roll when you slide along the dock.

a good tip I learnt is to write your mobile number on them!

I've got 6 of the ones with the blue ends (second from the left).
Every bloody time an end hits the gelcoat I get another blue mark I have to clean off - drives me bonkers!

I am thinking the same way. Because they are so compact you can have more of them.

I have found with the round inflated ones that once they deflate they almost always cannot be re-inflated.

Fat inflatable ones with cover and fender-tender (Ww. Cat no 36210N) work well for me.
They don't mark hull and piss easy to remove.

Some very excellent advice guys.
Interesting the colour can mark the hulls.
Might be a good combination to have mix of inflatable and flats .

Now as for flat fenders anyone with advice for cushions over soft foam ??

Tried the cleats and flat fenders and they work in flat water. The first Riv that goes past at 8 knots, not worth a pinch of s...t. Get some decent cylindrical fenders with cloth covers. To repair and repaint the entire side of your boat costs thousands.

Argh...no. Too much money for not much advantage, methinks.
The fender-tender is acceptable costwise, only if on special, otherwise a simple Ossel hitch on the life lines is the proper way.

Missus made fender covers out of old thick nylon leggings....tight fit....works a treat.

Sam, were they your old leggings? im thinking they be pretty sturdy

+1 to a degree, I have a mix. A few reasonable size round inflatables and a few flat ones.

Liked the Ossel hitch,scottish gill net hitch
but looks like used to tie smaller rope to larger,not vv as in rope to wire safetylines

Will find a use,as seems secure hitch!

I like the expensive whitworths white ones and blue tips, they are classic looking (I'm into vessel presentation), decent quality and good for marina's. I find the black/grey rectangle one's aesthetically displeasing despite their other added utility as high lighted above.

The most useful thing about these ones is they tow well, if Im ever going up the coast by myself or with just 1 other person I will tow one of these on a long line, should anyone fall overboard they can grab on. this is particularly useful, giving the skipper the time to make the turn in a rolling seaway.

Decent quality from whitworths that's a joke and yes I can see the headlines Lady Luck found bogey boarding behind yacht after falling overboard making the yacht looking aesthetically displeasing but saving a life due to a cheap black and grey fender which actually are more expensive and higher quality than the cheap blue and white cylinder style ones..
