So there's another bloody rescue in the Southern Ocean at a cost of $$$$$$ waiting to happen. Suppose could ask the Phillipines Coast Guard to help out.

Check his website, this guy is no greenhorn. He's been doing this for half a century.

My first thoughts were he's totally mad but your right SRat the guy's an absolute legend. The The Royal Cruising Club doesn't hand out too many Medal of Seamanship! Respect.

Out of interest I did a bit of digging around in the above website and came upon the attached ,all 95 pages. If you have a spare hour or so it's worth a read.

After reading all 95 pages as a Saturday treat, l admit, l could not fault his way of thinking nor his actions.

I am not sure about following his footsteps blindly, nevertheless, he is talking sense and our shhittty world would be much much better off full of characters who act and leaders who think like him.

If that is the way he wants to live his life, I wish him all the best.

Having a blog seems to contradict the purpose of what he is doing unless the purpose is to record how minimal a person can live on the ocean and the effects of isolation on the human mind.

Dr. David Lewis conducted a study on that quite some time ago and recorded it in his book "Ice Bird". Serge Testa completed a similar adventure to what this guy is doing about 30 years ago.

I wonder about this guy's sanity and think his effort may be better directed if he was to man the first manned mission to Mars.

There is no doubt that he is completely anti social.

I think more anti establishment than anti social.

Some people are just happy in their own skin and dont need others to to feel a part of this world, while others need people around.

My rock climbing buddy told me a story recently of an experience when she was walking the bibbulmen track here in WA. At one camp she was talking to a fellow walker whos friend recently after 3 weeks walking together went mad with the solitude, threw all his clothes off one night and ran into the bush and needed rescuing.

Isolation and solitude affects people differently.

Personally I dont find it a bad trait if a person has the courage to do things alone. Good on him, he obviously has the conviction to do what makes him happy and make his dreams reality, even if a little strange to most.

Strangely this boat seems less seaworthy and capable of a decent performance than his previous design.

I think,this very minimalist vessel,is seaworthy.
Performance is probably about what you would expect with around 4 m2 of sail !
It's modest performance, is a compromise of his low energy design concept. Small size, shallow draft, simple, light weight (carbon fiber masts weigh <3kg) low powered rig etc.
The adventure itself a journey of the mind as well as the seas an incredible commitment.

He hasn't been heading in the right direction for a while. No pointing ability would have me on edge but I guess everybody tracked courses like that in back in square-rig days.

Hi all,
just got home after a couple of days away. Have been following Yrvinds progress, latest report;
POSTED ONJULY 7, 2018
Sailing report 7
Yrvind is now on Porto Santo. He has decided to restart with a new boat. ExLex, which is basically an experiment, has some issues that must be solved. For example is the boat too heavy, which affects both speed and stability. There is a serious problem with the stering control that causes the rudder to lock. It is too cramped inside and it has not been possible to handle the sail from the front hatch as it was intended. All in all, this means that Yrvind decided to make an restart and design a new boat where these problems is corrected. Yrvind now needs to rest and comes when he feels ready with a status update here on the website

practice makes progress
