Hello all

Loving the site

I'm getting closer and closer to finally getting my Red Witch off her mooring, but am slightly confused by the rigging for the main sheet. The attached photo shows what I believe attaches the main sheet to the boom, but I've never seen one of these before. This device is not attached to the boom; it can slide up and down as it sees fit? I have searched through hundreds of images for rigging set ups, and 'zoomed in' on every image of a Red Witch I can find, but none have one of these. Please can anyone confirm if they have this set up, or should I just attach an eye to the boom?

G'day, It's used to reef the mainsail. The sail wraps around the pole [ Boom ] in between this device. Which can then be pulled down to trim the mainsail in the normal fashion.

Thanks rumblefish; that was a very useful read. It's been so long since I last sailed, I'm feeling like a novice again.

Boat reno has been going reasonably well, and this coming weekend is looking good for the maiden sail. However, I'm still concerned by the lack of a 'positive' position for the main sheet. What stops this device from sliding down the boom (towards the mast) when running?

I'm thinking about attaching a rope to it (from the rear of the boom) to ensure it can't happen, or am I just being daft????

Yes, run a line from the end of the boom, preferably something like a 4mm Dyneema.
