Lock up your boats guys!

Wow, in all the years I've heard of plenty of Haines Hunters and even Bertram25's getting knocked off but never something like that!

I reckon if they rocked up with the right supplys and given the weather window has been good they could have shot across to NZ.
or take it to QLD pit stop then onto South Pacific /Southeast Asia where she will live out her days unnoticed.

I took a boat from Australia to PNG, after clearing customs in Cairns. In the middle of the Coral Sea we were called up by a patrol boat...after giving them some details, boat, clearance etc - they said stand by, about 10 mins later they called back - all ok have a nice trip. We scanned the horizon but could not see a boat anywhere.
So they do watch.

You could of course hop along the coast avoiding the "Border patrols" till you make a quick trip north to international waters. But then you are more likely been seen by the locals and or police.

I do agree with you ~ but how about the Kiwi guy only 6months ago or so that sailed a 6m cat over from NZ under prepared with very very basic Nav gear (think he had a compass)

he made land in Ulladulla and was there 3 days before customs and the local cops and marine people worked it all out.

when interviewed he said something like ' I was hoping to make land between Lake Macq and Eden'

this guy really slipped through the net !!

I remember a story the Maritime guy told us a few years back about a boat in Sydney that went missing from it's mooring, then reappeared about a week later with a fresh coat of antifoul. Seems the boatshed picked up the wrong boat....

No the one you have pictured has Teak toe rails. I find it rather strange all reports went quiet on Facebook threads regarding the stolen one.

The last I heard at the end of last week was the stolen boat was seen sailing north of Noosa and confirmed by the owner that it was his boat and authorities were being notified, but heard nothing since.

criminals that steal boats /cars etc. have never been smart !!!!!! imagine the planning session ........ " ok biggsy you hotwire it and itchy you get the main up , then we will outrun the water police !!! if we see anyone we will hide below !!!........this plan is foolproof !!"

It was obviously well planned or its a scam. How did they know how much fuel , water etc keys , supply's ,charts, passage plan? It's not foolproof sandS

Yeah, and for less than the cost of the insurance excess.

Just crane it up on a freight and ship it the northern hemisphere

Or perhaps there's a damaged one up north and they just cut the mast and rigging of and trucked it some where and used the old damaged boat ID and mast and rigging any thing is possible and she a rebirth a change of colour who would know
They could crane it into a open top 40 foot shipping container if it was under that length you would not know where it was
trucked any where

Even a excavator could lift a yacht like that out of the water and drop it in a shipping container Then the truck lifts the shipping contain back on to the tray and away we go

I also saw this today, what an amazing story. He nearly got away with it.

I dont know how they keep track of boats in New Zealand as you dont need to register them over there
