I checked under my boat on Saturday, to find it covered in barnacles, she was slipped and painted with Micron 66 last August. I was a little disappointed at the amount of barnacle growth. Google search has come up with a study from Sweden, the aim is to find a coating that is kind on the ocean, but effective against barnacles. LEAF stands for Low Emission AF. I realise there a lots of snake oil claims, but this looks interesting non the less. The low emission part of the product is the nasty chemical that resists barnacles stays in the paint substrate, so when the barnacle latches on to the paint and digs in, it quickly decides the surface is not to its liking.
I can't find any listing for this product here in Aus. Has anyone else seen anything on this subject?

I've heard similar ideas before; people blending cayenne pepper, chilli powder etc into their usual antifoul to achieve the same result. There's a thread at forums.ybw.com/index.php?threads/chili-powder-in-antifoul.197326/ .

yes i I have seen all sorts of ideas too!
The barnicals are the problem here, they don't stick to slick surfaces such as prop speed on my sail drive, but love traditional AF

I had same problem in Burraneer Bay but only around the water line around the stern area either side.

Port hacking has had this problem for a few years now.
Different areas always seem to have different problems.
In Kogarah Bay we have a bad slime problem which is nowhere near as bad in Gwawley Bay just operside.

I think it is more water movement as well as less mud.

Thanks for the reply guys. It seems like one remedy, after spending on another haul out and AF job is to get used to giving the bottom a rub before the barnacles get a grip! Lucky I just got a dive Hookah set up. Ablative soft AF which naturally I have is probably not the best AF for a regular run routine. I Know the implication of going to hard, lot of work!
The LEAF AF project carried out in Europe seemed promising, I received a reply back from the research scientist that started the LEAF
THey are struggling to get to market. The silicon style AF used on freight ships could be a good alternative, none of the little bugger could hold on the sail drive housing I have Prop speed coated.

I will try Sydchis's suggestion.
I will add chilli powder to one side and no chilli to the other and let you know the results.
Not overly optimistic though.
If it worked someone would have come have it on the market by now.
Either way not an expensive or difficult experiment.

I would more look at trying both on the one side . Growth can be different on both sides with prevailing sunlight hitting one side more then the other. My starboard side definitely gets more growth then the port.

People have been using chilli powder for years. Getting real proof of it's effectiveness is allusive! If it worked I should imagine manufacturers would already use it.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this product.

Hi Richard, I came across that LEAF project too and it looks interesting. Pity we can't get a few tins out here to do a test in Australia....

How much did the dive hookah cost to set up? I've been thinking that way too, hard antifoul and regular dive scrubs.

I looked at the Hempel Silic One product (silicon based) that is suitable for sailing boats. I just couldn't find any real independent reviews on it. It's expensive too I believe. Also if it doesn't work and you want to remove it, it requires a special removal compound that probably costs an arm and a leg also.

I think we have probably covered the same google truck mate. I came across a similar to silic from a US company. Today I spoke to a international rep, they have a silicon type coating, as used on ships. He advised they did a test on some fast ferries in Qld, the results were not startling, the boats were not fast enough to completely wash off the slime, we're talking 22 knots, so that leaves us out!
rubbing down to remove the slime is not advised too many times.
I made comment to him about the great results on the sail drive with prop speed, but he suggested, the new AP, I wonder why we can't get micron 77? Only people with 20 metres plus boats are allowed entry to that club?
The build up of barnacle is worst around the top of the rudder and sail drive, that is where Trilux was used to protect Alloy parts. I wonder if that is were the barnacles colonise? I have already booked an April haul out, so unless I can find anything else, I'm probaby shooting for a hard AF that I can buff and scrub regularly, and I would love to try a silicon foul release product for the areas last done in Trilux!
Hookah, I tried a cheaper option, no regulator and a little compressor running continually, I would recommend spending more for the real deal. I went with a Nardi extreme 12 volt. Nice guy that deals in them turned me away from the petrol version. Electric units are quieter, and cycle off. This unit has a nice carbon filter too, 2k
There is a more compact set up, really light and nicely engineered for 1.7k. I went up a model so I could add a diver for pleasure dives!

i would like like to think the foul release really works. I paint companies are really trying to offer a AF product with the minimal amount of nasties, as regulated by our governments. So you can draw the parallel to the war years and pool petrol, and you have a fast SS100 Jaguar!
The rep I spoke to was quite candid, he off the cuff said if you were allowed to use certain chemicals, well you know where I'm going!
the active ingredient in the LEAF project is one thing that he indicated would work a treat.
might be time for some test panels, I reckon my water hole would certainly test them out!

It appears that I've inadvertently used hard AF, hauled out 3 months ago, clock is showing 40 hrs and when I wiped the slime off the paint is still on the prop. (I didn't bother with prop speed )So it looks like I've joined the scrub club.

Here is one to keep an eye out for, SV Delos has just splashed back into the water with a new silicone anti-foul job and an ultrasonic hull cleaner.

The anti-fouling is Sea-Speed V 10 X Clear and the ultrsonics are by Sonihull

As Delos is a well used boat it should provide an excellent overview of how the systems are working, with that in mind I guess that you are going to have to have peek at the Delos channel once in a while if you want to see how it's performing in a real world experience.

$30/hour is what the yard would have charged them but as they did most of the work themselves they saved themselves a bucket load of money, try finding a yard in Australia that will work for only $30/hour.

Stop the video at 9:13 and the price paid for the primer was $1440, Whitworths on the other hand would have charged you $6478.2 for the same amount of International Interprotect. So your point was what exactly?

As for if there is money on Youtube, Delos currently has 308564 subscribers, they have uploaded 298 videos and their estimated yearly earnings are up to $79500. year. So yes, there is money to made on Youtube

The point of the post was to highlight that someone is actually using the silicone paint on their bottom and as that subject has been brought up on here several times I thought it may interest some here to see if there is a cost benefit. The paint manufacturer claims protection for 8 to 10 years and if that's true then it is a cheaper way to protect your bottom from lil critters.
The same applies to the ultrasonic anti-fouling system, people here have repeatedly inquired about it.
Plus there is the comparison between the Mantus anchor vs. their older CQR

I guess if all you got out of it was that there might be gold dust in the paint then you missed the entire point of the post.

Due to fat finger factor that price is so obviously wrong and the correct Whitworths price is 1619.55. many apologies.

I merely read the costings from the first column! No idea why he had two columns but it seems the primer was only about $1500 US.

My 'secret weapon' was tetracycline.
Beside this blurb below, l used it for years - 3 grams to a liter of antifoul - and if it did not stop the growth of nasties, it slowed their growth down considerably pushing the intervals between antifouls out to eighteen months to two years depending on usage.

If one does not use one's boat, no material is going to stop the slime and barnacles growing! I hope this is understood by all?!
It is used in the veterinary industry as horse medicine and even the expired one is working well on boats.
So make your vet mates do some digging in the cupboards and try it.
It worked for me. Btw, l got the idea off one of the Dashew's books
