My current insurance will not cover liveaboard and I may need to live aboard the first few weeks once I move the boat down south.
Is there any comprehensive insurance that will cover people living on the boat?

As long as you have another address you aren't, technically living aboard if you are staying on the boat for only a few weeks. If no other address then you might have an issue.
I tried to find some cheaper insurance last year and found a lot wouldn't cover live aboards. If they did they were crazy premiums. I ended up staying with Club Marine. The cost was pretty good compared to the other quotes I got and they are a reputable company. They cover live aboards.

This is crazy.

If a yacht is being used as "live aboard" the risk to the insurance company is mimimal. What?? If you are living aboard you are going to risk your home by not making sure your systems are all working???

Most insurance is a rip off. Third party property and public indemnity is all that one should need to travel the world.

The rule that I follow is that my yacht or yachts never constitute more than 10% of my nett worth.

I self insure on total loss.

the issue is cisco that some marinas require you to have comprehensive insurance, you want it or not. And that more and more becoming a standard. Everybody rubs everybody's back

Why on earth one is insisting on telling everything absolutely everything of one's circumstances when taking out insurance is beyond me!
If one is trying to insure one's yacht against all and every mishaps possible and list it in the policy it would take a thousand page document to do so and the costs would be prohibitive.

What a policy specifically prohibits is out, no questions about it, whoever, what it does not specifically prohibits are in. Period.
(is the policy prohibiting to cruise in coral infested waters, no. One is insured ! Period.)
When one is putting in a claim, one does not make a confession, one is simply filling in a form.
What is being asked gets answered with caution and nous and using only a few words. Yes and no.
One does not answer questions which are not being asked.

If your a liveaboard why wouldn't you take comprehensive insurance it's your home silly not too really. I send my survey reports to my broker and set a agreed value for replacement. And pay the monthly fees and don't contact them unless they contact me. They Didn't even ask for a gas certificate or rig inspection that's there problem not mine. I don't see what all the hype is all about do you live in a uninsured house?

It's a complicated issue , there's a influx of wanna be live the dream livaboards. A percent are not leaving marinas and have no idea how. Keep under the radar and have a back up address . Some Caravan parks are also making things hard to live in even if you have a big ass motor home!

I think David was referring to a comprehensive insurance not covering you living aboard and if you are in a marina, you won't be living aboard without being permitted to do so. If it is a total loss, the insurance company will care and investigate the circumstances. You my be able to get away with "your version of events" at an anchorage and may be able to claim. One of my mates said that even Nautilus would not cover liveaborads. I am still not certain if Clubmarine covers it or not. Just too lazy to read through the insurance papers I suppose

I'm pretty sure it's just 3rd party in any marina. comprehencive is just for people that want insurance on there own property that's what it covers. 3rd party covers other boats not yours like a car. It's not rocket science or some rip off . It's what you get what you pay for.

I not for live aboard, 3rd party not enough. You need to have comprehensive in marinas that allow it. Got two mates living in 2 marinas in GC and both require them to have comprehensive.

Well that seems a bit new seems that marina is clearing the uninsured from the fully insured .fair enough. We shipped a boat from south oz to Western Australia today no one talked insurance but no doubt it was taken care off when your talking about boats well over 100k

I believe what the marinas want is the standard 10 million liability cover, not necessarily the comprehensive insurance. But I could be wrong.
